Weekend Update: Goodbye, Seth Meyers. Hello, Colin Jost

Weekend Update: Goodbye, Seth Meyers. Hello, Colin Jost

For 12 and a half years Seth Meyers blessed Saturday Night Live’s weekend update desk, playing straight man to many of his hilariously inept guests such as “Drunk Uncle” played by Bobby Moynihan and city correspondent “Stefon” played by Bill Hader. So, when he left SNL at the end of February to live out his dream as a late night talk show host, a big hole was in need of being filled at the Weekend Update desk to join Meyers’s co-host Cecily Strong. And the empty seat–at the desk that many who have gone on to become prominent figures in the comedic industry– was filled by now head-writer Colin Jost.

Jost made his debut on Saturday evening and it soon became clear that the weekend update desk was left in good hands. Though he started out rough–perhaps due to understandable nerves– and could be frequently heard laughing in the background as Weekend Update guests took part in their typical hilarious shenanigans, Jost finished strong and delivered his spoofs on the week in news in his own unique way.

Highlights of Jost’s debut included describing Piers Morgan’s face as “gradually morphing into a potato” and poking fun at New Jersey governor Chris Christie. However, Strong’s interview with Taran Killam’s 19th century film critic “Jebediah Atkinson” stole the show as the hilariously dressed analyst found a problem with virtually every big name movie star that was nominated for an oscar this past weekend.

Though he’ll look to keep weekend update one of SNL’s most beloved sketches, Jost will have a much bigger job at hand: he’ll have to keep SNL as a whole alive with his new role as head writer. In a relatively young cast, Jost definitely has his work cut out for him, but his future figures to be bright judging the history of past Update hosts.
