Ouija Gives A Good Scare

Ouija Gives A Good Scare

Halloween is coming in only a few days, but if you feel that you’re just too old to trick or treat, you might want to take a look at some of the scary movies to watch this weekend. If you really want some good jump scares, consider seeing Ouija. When two girls mess around with a ouija board, it’s all fun and games. When one of them gets older and breaks one of the ouija rules, never play alone, she unleashes an evil from the other side. This shows that you should always follow the rules, kids. Otherwise you’ll die by hanging yourself from the second floor with Christmas lights, like poor Debbie.

Well, Debbie’s death did happen early in the movie. Then her best friend carries on the story when she thinks Debbie is trying to communicate to her through the ouija board. She involves several other friends and they play the game. Not a smart move on her part, but it’s a horror movie, so of course everything goes wrong. When they learn that the one they are talking to isn’t Debbie, but an evil ghost, they agree to stop playing with the board. The ghost, however, does not want to stop this game and say goodbye. It begins to haunt them relentlessly, sending some of them over the edge.

It certainly was original as far as scary movies go, but you can’t enjoy it for it’s character development. We hardly learned anything about the characters before it was too late. The deaths in the movie weren’t all that sad, just grotesque or frightening. The story itself included a plot twist typical of a horror movie, though you don’t really see it coming. It did accomplish in convincing me to never ever use a ouija board for anything.

Even though we weren’t very connected with all the characters in the movie, the actors and actresses still did an excellent job portraying each person in the film. The main character, Laine Morris, is played by Olivia Cooke. She hasn’t been in much, but I had the chance to see her acting in a television series called Bates Motel as a supporting character called Emma Decody. Her performance in the this series was quite enjoyable. Her voice and style of acting was very distinct, as I felt the character she played in Ouija and Bates Motel were similar in many ways.

If you’re looking to watch some good horror movies this weekend to really get into the Halloween spirit, go see Ouija. Another good movie to watch could be Annabelle, which is a movie about a scary doll. Either movie you choose should give you a reason to keep the lights on when you go to sleep!

4/5 Stars.
