On August 31 the king of rap came back to life. After about a year of silence and no new songs, Eminem released “Kamikaze”, the newest addition to his legendary collection of albums. The album features 13 songs, and out of those 13, 11 songs debuted on the Billboard Hot 100.

In Kamikaze, Eminem takes aim at some of the hottest rappers of 2018, with those rappers being Migos, Lil Pump, Lil Xan, Drake, along with other big rappers. On the other hand, the album shows how lyrically talented Eminem is. It brings back the old Eminem, the rap god Eminem.

In many of his songs, Eminem spits whatever comes to mind. Like the old Eminem, he doesn’t care what people think of him or the hate he would get from releasing these controversial songs.

In his song “The Ringer”, fans get a glimpse into the past of Eminem. The song has a similar beat to the one found in his hit Rap God. The beat is very quick paced then slow and it follows this pattern throughout the whole song. Listeners are hit with Eminem going absolutely crazy, rapping two to three verses in a matter of seconds. Overall, this song is a good hype song and I personally use it to get hype before a crazy workout.

Another one of his hits from his album is “Fall”. In “Fall” Eminem incorporates rap with R&B, and throughout the song, he switches between the two. This song is a good example of how he can use words usually not found in modern day rap and make it flow. This song also makes fun of modern-day rap, commonly referred to as “mumble rap”. The song personally gives me a very chill vibe. The rap combined with the R&B creates a great flow and is something I would listen to while playing video games or hanging out with friends.

In “Lucky You” Eminem combines with Joyner Lucas to make hands down the best song of the album. This song has a type of uplifting, fast beat, which goes well with Eminem’s and Lucas’s style of rapping. The whole song is four minutes of pure lyrical mastery. Both artists go in on the beat, with each verse being better than the last. The song is basically a diss-track on every rapper in the game with the main message being that all the rappers of this age are all the same and that none of them can copy Eminem’s and Lucas’s style of rap. This song reaches out to me on a personal level. It’s basically telling me to be myself and to shrug off all the haters and negativity in my life.

Switching up the style, his song “Good Guy” featuring Jessie Reyez has a much more subtle and romantic type beat. This song could give off two different kinds of vibes, depending on how you are feeling. If you’re having a good day, then it gives off feel-good vibes, but if your day hasn’t been the brightest, this song could put you in your feels. In the end, this song is something I could listen to if I was chilling and playing video games, or if I was spending time with my significant other.

In the end, with “Kamikaze” Eminem brings back the energy and flow commonly found in older rap songs. I personally really liked the album and thought it was one of his best. It brings back many old memories of me as a younger kid listening to him with all my friends. It hypes me up and motivates me to be myself. Overall, I give this album a 9/10. The beats are very fast/subtle, the lyrics are clever and catchy, and each song has a different meaning/message that is unique to that certain song.
