If there is one genre worth watching on Netflix these days, it’s thrillers. Lucky for us, a new movie called “The Weekend Away,” was released. Aside from being a thriller, watching the Gossip Girl star, Leighton Meester, playing Beth was another highlight. For those of you who are curious about what this exciting new film is about, just know that it’s very unexpected.

Let me tell you a little bit about the plot. In a beautiful country like Croatia, what could go wrong? What started as a relaxing weekend in southeast Europe for Beth and her best friend Kate, played by Christina Wolfe, turned out to be a nightmare. Right off the bat, you can tell that this movie involves a murder mystery. When Beth first visits Kate, the audience is introduced to the Airbnb host who gives off a sketchy vibe. We can also infer who is going to die within the next few minutes. Although this description may paint the movie as predictable, trust me, it’s not. Throughout watching this movie, I made multiple conspiracies as to who the murderer was, but of course, none of which were ultimately right.

As previously mentioned, this movie contains so many plot twists, which was a good thing. It is so much better to make predictions, but be totally wrong about them when watching a horror movie or thriller. Furthermore, there were times I thought I really nailed down the murderer, which had me on a rollercoaster. Overall, I think this movie did a great job at entertaining and turning the viewer’s gears into an investigative mode. The acting was phenomenal too, but Leighton especially nailed the emotion of distress and sadness. The directors also convinced their viewers that they knew who was responsible for the murder by adding an eerie setting. In addition, they gave off a creepy sensation, which added tension to the plot. I also appreciated how the movie was put together and the amazing cinematography of the film, as the shots of Croatia were beautiful.

Even though this movie did have many highs, it also contains some lows. For example, there were times when it seemed to be going nowhere with no advancements to the plot. In addition, some parts were just really confusing like when Beth was reading Kate’s phone and discovered something. But in my opinion, the highs ultimately beat the lows.

After watching “The Weekend Away,” I would definitely say it’s worth a watch. In general, I would rate “The Weekend Away” an 8/10.
