Starting off with a win for their first game of the season, against Highland Park, the Varsity Wolves’ played efficiently and with passion. The boys played well throughout the entire game. They were able to end the game with a score of 60-44.

Head coach Mike Wasielewski shared the performance of the players the next day, “The team played well on offense, we did a great job running our sets and executing against Highland Park’s zone. Davee Flowers and Pavlos Stamatopoulos led the team today. [Flowers] scored 24 points and had 9 rebounds. [Stamatopoulos] scored 12 points with 3 rebounds. We also had strong performances off the bench from Aidin Custovic and Auston Ryan. Our team continues to gel and we are trying different combinations of guys playing together. We are also trying to improve our defense and eliminate mental mistakes,” Wasielewski said.

Throughout the whole game, the team on the sidelines was cheering on the players on the court, motivating them to win the game. The boys have been preparing for this season throughout the year, and are ready to show off their hard work.

“Our first game of the season I think went well and we put in a lot of effort into practicing. The off-season was also very long and we practiced every day, so seeing the hard work pay off against people we don’t play much was reassuring. We are so used to playing against each other all the time, so being able to see my peers get better is honestly amazing. Additionally, I think the season is going to be good because the Niles West Boys basketball team hasn’t had a winning record for over ten years. Last year was the best one they have had and that team only had even wins and losses. I think this season we are going to beat that this year. No team is expecting us on their radar to jump above and be at the top, but I think we are going to exceed their expectations,” senior Emir Becovic said.

Lots of people came out to watch the game. Students and parents were found in the bleachers getting the Wolves excited for each play they made. Whenever West scored, fans and the sideline on the team were quick to holler and cheer.

“I think the varisty boys’ team played very well on Tuesday. They did end up winning which was great. That tea has such a good connection with one another and you can tell just by watching from the stands. I think they’re gonna be great this season and I can’t wait to see them improve each game they play,” sophomore Ajla Parganlija said.

The boys are scheduled to play Glenbrook South at home on December 16th, so make sure to come out and support the team!
