The 75th annual Emmy Awards aired on Monday, Jan. 15th, and with it came a runway of celebrities donning elaborate looks. Wherever a red carpet appears, celebrities must mark their award-winning moment with an equally victorious outfit to be remembered by. Here are some of my stand-outs of the evening, with a poll at the end to vote for your favorite look!
1. Ayo Edebiri in Louis Vuitton
Winning her first Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series “The Bear,” Ayo Edebiri knew to show out for the start of her critically acclaimed career. She wore a custom-shaped, pleated leather dress by Louis Vuitton. This look is on track with many of her previous carpet looks, generally opting for a black palette with odd-fitting features. Construction-wise, the dress is a marvel of Vuitton’s craftmanship especially since leather manipulation is very hard to do and is usually hand-sewn. Edebiri also wears diamond stud earrings worth 45k, a tennis necklace worth 15k, and an emerald ring racking up 4k, all by Brilliant Earth. Overall the egg-shaped ensemble is unique and a staple of Ayo Edebiri.
2. Rachel Brosnahan in Versace
Nominated for Oustanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” Rachel Brosnahan knows how to look marvelous indeed. She wears a wine-red custom Versace dress, striking against the other toned-down looks of the evening. The dress includes a fitted corset, classic gold embellishments, lace-up sides, and a beautifully draped leg slit. She knows the lesson on mixing metals, keeping her jewelry and shoes largely gold with stacked rings and earrings. The construction of this piece is a testament to Donatella Versace’s understanding of the figure, fitting and accentuating Brosnahan perfectly while keeping a sleek appearance with her hair. This look combines risque and sophisticated into one sentence, all down to the matching nail color.
3. Colman Domingo in Louis Vuitton
Notorious for his menswear fashion sense, Colman Domingo came prepared with another clean-cut and fabulous look. Domingo was a representative for GLAAD, an organization dedicated to LGBTQ+ representation in entertainment, and fittingly broke a few gender stereotypes with his look. He wears a bespoke Louis Vuitton suit, with a long jacket and a diamond pearl brooch on his lapel. His standout non-studded jewelry includes an Omega watch and mismatched pearl/platinum earrings, while his diamond accessories include a tennis bracelet, ring, and ruby necklace by Reza. Domingo is proof that beautiful accessorizing is much appreciated for men on the red carpet.
4. Gillian Anderson in Gabriela Hearst
Gillian Anderson, a living testament to aging like fine wine, brings on a graceful statement gown at the Emmys this year with another white palette, a signature color for Anderson. Showing up to the event in support of her fellow actors, she wears a specially designed Gabriela Hearst gown with a hand-embroidered pattern that can only be described as inspired by her role as Dr. Jean Milburn on the Netflix show “Sex Education.” The creme-colored gown features a raw edge and a seemingly popular fitted bust with a pronounced skirt that multiple different celebrities wore this year. She pairs the refined look with simple jewelry, a diamond necklace, and teardrop earrings. Her shoes and bag are by Aquazurra, minimalist additions to go with her minimal make-up look. Keep it up, Anderson!
5. Matty Matheson in Henry Rossen
The real-life chef and native Canadian Matty Matheson arrived at the event with his colleagues from the now Emmy-winning show “The Bear.” He wears a simple tuxedo by Harry Rosen with one of my favorite fashion decisions for a black-tie event, socks and sandals. Sporting a pair of Church’s leather sandals and Reebok gym socks, this guy knows how to subvert and impress. Seriously, google his footwear for the evening. It’s also nice to see a celebrity with tattoos, as Matheson has many. He memorably ended the night by kissing co-star Ebon Moss-Bachrach, all while being comfortable and stylish. Bravo.
6. Jessica Williams in Rodarte
Jessica Williams appeared at the Emmys this year with her nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. Her beautiful acting in “Shrinking” is not the only asset she brings but also her gorgeous dress. She wears a custom Rodarte gown with Betsy Johnson shoes. The gown aligns with the fitted bust theme for many of the looks, with a stunning flounced tulle skirt and a bow in the back. A visual lesson in perfect balance, she opts for a minimal makeup look with her signature Marilyn-esque mole. She wears a few diamond rings but no necklace, a take on simplicity with her vintage Hollywood-star curled hair and tear-drop earrings.
7. Simona Tabasco in Marni
Nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for “White Lotus” Simona Tabasco came to steal the show at the Emmys. She wears a custom Marni gown, from the Spring Summer ’24 collection. The gown is made of collaged flowers sewn to the base fabric, with raw edges and visible stitching on some flowers. The hand-made garment belongs in a museum along with her Mary Jane bubblegum-pink pumps also by Marni. To add the cherry on top, she wears minimal Cartier jewelry, a few rings, and tear-drop earrings (again). Francesco Risso, the creative director of Marni, outdid himself with this design. Tabasco lives to wear one of the most exciting looks of the night.
