The first-ever “Snowcoming,” will come to West on Sat. Feb. 11 with its theme being a Sneakerball. The organizer of the Snowcoming is Student Activities Director Caitlin Lucci, who wanted the theme to be unique, encouraging students to show off their cool kicks while being comfortable the whole night.
Snowcoming and Homecoming are similar to each other, but with each being in different seasons. Lucci decided to take some of the activities from Homecoming and apply them to this year’s Snowcoming based on how much students enjoyed them.
“Last semester’s Homecoming activities were a hit with the ping pong tables and air hockey, which we will be bringing to this year’s Snowcoming. Instead of having inflatables, I am trying to work with the eSports team to be able to have Nintendo switches for students,” Lucci said.
A Double PM assembly was held Mon. Jan. 8, and during this time, Lucci stated that there may be a silent disco. However, based on the outcome of the students’ reactions and opinions, the idea has been scrapped.
“At Snowcoming, there will be no silent disco. It’s something that we have never done before, even though I think it would be cool and different,” Lucci said.
During the Snowcoming week, there will be a spirit week along with an Olympic Games held on Tues. Feb. 6. Each grade will make a team of 10, representing each class.
“I tried to think of something we have never done before and think the outcome of these Olympic games will be very fun. There is also a way to win points outside of competing in the games. Students from each grade will be able to come and support their grade by watching them compete to win extra points,” Lucci said.
Since this is new to students at West, many have thoughts and ideas about the new event.
“I’m glad there won’t be a silent disco at Snowcoming. I think it would be weird to take off your headphones and see everyone jumping up and down with no background music,” sophomore Katherine Zervos said.
Milan Dotlich, sophomore, adds to what he hopes to see for the spirit week.
“In my opinion, I don’t think it’s going to be fun. I also don’t get the whole shoe theme. They could have come up with a way better theme than shoes. I just hope there is karaoke during the spirit week like there was for previous homecoming weeks,” Dotlich said.
Like Homecoming, students will be able to bring outside guests to Snowcoming. The forms are located in the student commons and the dean’s office. Forms will need to be filled out and turned back to either location by the end of the school day on Fri. Jan. 26.
