Within a month, drama that has been going on between artists Kendrick Lamar and Drake since 2013 has grown more serious than expected. Diss tracks have been dropping left and right; secrets and stories have been shocking not only to me but to the whole world. Lamar and Drake’s tension goes back a decade when Lamar said he would “murder” Drake when featured on Big Sean’s song called “Control.” However, ten years later the revival of their feud is leaving everyone stunned.
The most recent drama was rekindled after the release of Metro Boomin’s album, “We Don’t Trust You” on March 22, 2024, which critics believe is taking shots at Drake. Putting side by side Drake’s album “For All the Dogs,” which was released October 6, 2023, many noticed that the songs on Metro Boomin’s album align and have similar titles in the same order as Drake’s album, which was released five months prior. In the song “Like That” from Metro Boomin’s album, Kendrick Lamar replies to Drake’s lyrics in his album in which he said he, J. Cole and Lamar are “big three.” Kendrick replies by saying that there isn’t a big three, “it’s just big me.” Can it just be jealousy? Aside from the tension with Lamar, Metro Boomin and Drake have always had tension with one another as Metro Boomin publicly spoke about how he did not appreciate how his albums never received awards or recognition, but Drake’s did. Then, less than two weeks later, Metro Boomin released an album called “We Still Don’t Trust You.” Metro added the “still” to emphasize his annoyance for Drake. To me, this was funny and got me thinking, “Wow he must love Drake that much to make two whole albums about him.” The energy and time spent making TWO whole albums about a person is what I think fan behavior is. Even if I was in the music industry and had drama with someone, you would never see me wasting that much time and energy on another person. It is so childish.
That is when the diss tracks started to be released. First, J.Cole released a rebuttal track claiming that Lamar fell off, but he quickly deleted the track and apologized to Lamar. In reply to “Like That,” Drake released a track called “Push Ups,” which took shots at many artists like The Weekend, Metro Boomin, Future and Kendrick. Kendrick replies with an unserious, pretty goofy diss track a week after Drake’s. This is when things started to get serious. Drake dropped a diss track called “Family Matters,” making pretty heavy accusations towards Kendrick. Within 30 minutes of “Family Matters” being posted, Kendrick replied and made extremely wild claims and exposes a lot about Drake that people did not know about in a song called “Meet The Grahams.” Hours after, Kendrick posted another song,”Not Like Us”, calling Drake more absurd things. These accusations are extremely personal and if I was in Drake’s shoes, I would not know how to react. I know he is in his bed crying because that is something I would do.
I have always been a fan of Drake since I was young. I have always showed support for him as I went to his concert over the summer and almost all of my ten playlists on Apple Music have some song of his. After hearing all the allegations about him online, it makes me think of him differently. Who knows if it is true? Who knows if Kendrick Lamar is being honest about everything? I now look at Drake differently, in a way I did not before. What I find most absurd is that there are many allegations that he has a daughter that he has been hiding or not supporting. While this may be another allegation, I think this one may be true because he did hide his son Adonis, as well.
This tension between the two has been blowing up all over the Internet, causing dilemma and many people in shock. I don’t know if this is a publicity stunt for both to receive attention or if this is real hatred between the two. If anything, I think they should solve this privately either in person or through text, because it is getting too messy. Making diss tracks about one another back and forth reminds me too much of my middle school days when boys were making diss tracks on each other for not getting invited to birthday parties or bike rides to the park. While it is interesting to keep up with, these 30-year-old men need to solve this on their own in a more mature way, not over the internet.
