School is back in session, which means fall sports have started to retake action. Last year, the girl’s varsity volleyball team went 10-0 in the conference. And for this year, the team is on track for that same record, beating Warren High School in three sets on Monday Aug., 26.
The Wolves started by winning a nail-biting first set, but as the second set began Warren was able to secure a big lead and ended that set with a win. Gladly, the third set ended with the Wolves taking the win home.
Physical Education teacher and coach for the girl’s varsity volleyball team, Stacy Roth has coached the varsity team for 21 years. Throughout her years of coaching, this situation has happened a lot. Roth states the advice she gives to the girls to overcome this.
“Whenever you get to a third set, it’s about heart, the will to focus and push through. So, we talked about wanting it more than the other team and executing serves and also our plays along with pushing through even if you are tired because it’s the last set you have to win,” Roth said.
This year, the varsity team has multiple underclassmen. Sophomore Sydney Ordower is one of the four underclassmen on the team this year. Ordower had ups and downs during the game but was proud of her first game on varsity.
“I was really proud of my passing, especially because with serve receive, even if I shanked a pass, I was able to get the next one and stay focused. Our saying is one and done and that’s what I was thinking at that moment,” Ordower said.
Senior Kaylee Cao is one of the captains for the team this year. Over the summer, the team worked on multiple drills and plays to apply in games. Cao states how their effort over the summer helped them secure this win.
“We had a lot of communication during the game which helped us run our free play balls. The team worked on both of these things over the summer, which in the end, helped us pull off the win,” Cao said.
Every sports team has goals, but what is needed to achieve them is perseverance and persistence.
“The team’s goal this year is to get as far as we can into the playoffs. We have gotten into sectionals quite a bit but have recently lost the first game in sectionals. So for the team, one goal that we have set is to get passed that first game in sectionals and continue,” Roth said.
