The Skokie Police Department was notified of an incident at Niles North High School which resulted in the stabbing of a Niles North Security Guard on Tuesday, Jan. 14, at approximately 9:30 p.m.
The incident took place after a basketball game between the Evanston Wildkits and Niles North Vikings and is currently being investigated. The highly anticipated game ended in a Wildkits overtime victory with the score being 68-64. At the culmination of the game, multiple fights broke out involving students and community members and the authorities were notified immediately.
Upon request for a copy of the police report, the Village of Skokie has denied the request due to the involvement of a juvenile offender.
“Your request for the requested records has therefore been denied due to the involvement of a juvenile offender,” Rolando Ithier, a FOIA officer from the Village of Skokie said.
Following the incident, Niles North principal Marlon Felton sent out an email to Niles North staff members addressing the incident.
“No D219 students were injured or arrested as a part of the incident. Niles Township District 219 is fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation, which is a police matter,” Felton said.
Felton went on to say that a security guard was injured during the incident.
The incident took place three days before the highly anticipated Skokie Skirmish which takes tonight at 6:30 p.m. when the Wolves will take on the Vikings at Niles West. Considering the recent incident, Assistant Principal Steve Parnther stated that staff will follow all standard security protocols for the upcoming game.
“Regarding tomorrow night’s game, we will follow our standard safety protocols, which include team discussions and ensuring adequate staff coverage at key locations,” Parnther said.
West will be in collaboration with North staff in order to ensure adequate security.
“We collaborate with Niles North to ensure they provide security and staff support from their facility. For larger events, we conduct thorough walk-throughs to review logistics,” Parnther said.
Niles West’s School Resource Officer [SRO] Nick Larson believes that it is unlikely that this incident will result in threats at any other event at both schools and that they will have a safety plan put in place before the game.
“This was an isolated incident and there are no threats to any other events at either school based on what occurred on Tuesday… A safety plan is made by the school before the games,” Larson said.
Superintendent Thomas Moore is confident that an incident similar to the one on Tuesday night is unlikely to occur again, considering the incident didn’t involve any District 219 students, and instead were people outside the District 219 community, who came in and caused trouble.
“This wasn’t our kids fighting with our kids, this wasn’t our athletes fighting with our athletes, these were people from outside our school community who came in and decided to cause trouble,” Moore said.
