58 years of Super Bowl history, where people sit down Sunday night and spend their time watching TV. Many are only there for the big performance at halftime. This year, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles played against each other, and Kendrick Lamar headlined the Super Bowl Halftime Show.
Many people were excited about a big performance this year after Lamar won five Grammies this year, and one was for his hit song “Not Like Us,” but this year many were left disappointed. At the start of the show, he was sitting on top of a car singing the lyrics to an unreleased song while all his backup dancers came out of the car. Throughout the show, he played many popular songs like “Humble,” “All the Stars” and “DNA” all ranging from some older songs to ones from his newest album.
This year I was among one of the many people excited to see him perform, but I was let down. Lamar brought out SZA to sing their popular songs “All The Stars” and “Luther,” but SZA was not given nearly enough time on stage. Many other people can agree with that like junior Joell Garcia.
“I’m excited every year to watch the performance at halftime, [but] this year I was disappointed because of the lack of time SZA was given to perform as a feature. Normally when someone [is] featured in the Super Bowl Halftime Show, they get enough time to perform a whole song, but SZA only did little verses from two songs,” Garcia said.
I can fully agree with Garcia’s opinion, I love the song “All The Stars” and I really wished more of it was sung. Lamar only played the beginning which isn’t even the best part of the song, it was only played for no longer than 20 seconds. It was also super hard to understand what lyrics he was saying, I thought this might have been a problem with my TV audio, but after reading other people’s posts online, it was a struggle for many. However, I’m sure many can agree the camera quality was good and the dancers were exceptional this year. I did like the setup and the “theme” Lamar had for this year’s performance.
While there were many things to complain about this year, Lamar’s many disses on Drake were enjoyable to watch while he performed. Drake and Lamar have had many songs directed towards each other since last year, which started the “Drake vs Kendrick” debate. Throughout the show, Lamar kept playing the beginning of “Not Like Us” but not finishing it, kind of teasing everyone. He ended up playing the song and when saying Drake’s name he smiled in the camera which many people thought was funny.
The night was also full of political statements, the backup dancers were dressed in red, white and blue to symbolize the American flag and Samuel L. Jackson was portraying “Uncle Sam.” He was there to challenge Lamar’s performance by saying his music was “loud” and “ghetto,” towards the end of the show a halftime dancer held up Sudanese and Palestinian flags together with the words “Sudan” and “Gaza.” This was not televised which caused a lot of controversy.
This year’s performance did not compare to past years, but it was still enjoyable to watch. I wished he played more of his older songs instead of his new ones, and I wished SZA got more stage time. We can only hope that next year’s performance can make up for Lamar’s letdown this year.
