Student Government and Cabinet, from all grade levels, will merge to form the Associated Student Body (ASB) starting next school year.
Student Activities director Caitlin Lucci made this transition to ASB in order to enable more effective communication between student government and cabinet, be more inclusive and reduce confusion about the scope of government and cabinet’s work.
“I think of it more as a restructuring, and I want to be clear that it’s not because the system we had in place was bad. I believe, though, that our student leaders can make more of an impact if we collaborate. We are doing great work, but there isn’t as much collaboration as I would like there to be. I also believe that we have a duty to make all students feel like they have a voice and that they’re part of something so I’m trying to make it more streamlined so that we can have a stronger impact school wide and avoid confusion,” Lucci said.
This restructuring will come with changes to the leadership structure in ASB. Instead of a president and officers for each grade level there will be committees. These committees will be based on self-selected area of interest, and during school wide events ASB will be behind them, according to Lucci. Amidst the new changes, one main thing that will continue to stay the same is the meeting time of 4th period.
Junior Cabinet president and Student Government Officer, Emilia Rydzewski, expresses her beliefs on the effectiveness of ASB.
“I definitely am a bit hesitant and skeptical as I’m concerned that some clubs, especially government, will have responsibilities fall through the cracks. I believe that the system of having a cabinet for each grade and government encourages productivity, as we don’t want too many cooks in the kitchen. So, I’m quite curious to see what Ms. Lucci has planned in terms of committees because I also understand that this system will allow for much more collaboration,” Rydzewski said.
Freshman cabinet president Irina Kang is currently making new goals for next year.
“[Next year,] I envision continuing to make sure there’s enough school spirit going on and that everyone’s a part of the school and feel connected and part of the community and that we’re doing good for the community through volunteering, service and planning events to make sure there’s a good high school experience for everyone,” Kang said.
