Sabrina Carpenter released her new album “Man’s Best Friend” on Aug. 29. This is her seventh album after coming out with “Short and Sweet” a year ago. This new album has caused controversy from the cover photo to the lyrics in her new songs.
Many people have brought up that this album is a bad look for feminism because of the cover photo and the lyrics of her song “Tears.” Some things that have been brought up by previous fans are that this album is completely male-centered. I have to say that for this album, I disagree. In my opinion, the album highlights a lot of being in relationships and dealing with romantic troubles. I don’t think it’s fair to say that just because she’s centered an album around romance that it automatically makes her male-centered.
Personally, I really resonated with this album because of how freeing it felt to listen to it. The music really reminded me of ABBA, in a way, especially “Goodbye” because of its high-energy melody. Compared to the previous album “Short and Sweet,” this album’s vibe is similar with the same energetic melody and fun vibe.
One of my favorite songs personally from the album is “My Man on Willpower.” I think the lyrics are so catchy and they have been stuck in my head since the album came out. Another song I really like is “Don’t Worry, I’ll Make You Worry.” The song is very similar to “Don’t Smile” from her previous album. They both have a very calming feel to it, which I personally am a big fan of.
I think overall that her lyrics are very well thought out. I’ve found myself getting a lot of them stuck in my head. Another song that’s stuck out to me is “Sugar Talking.” I really like how laid back it is and how smooth the lyrics are. I think her vocals really came out to shine in this album. In the song “When Did You Get Hot,” she does a riff that I haven’t heard in her other songs and I think it’s really nice that she’s starting to explore that more. The vibe of this album overall is very laid back, with a mix of some very energetic songs in between.
Another thing I thought was clever was her subtle note to her exes in her song, “Go Go Juice” by using “Gosh” instead of “Josh,” “Villain” instead of “Dylan,” “Larry” instead of “Barry” and “John” instead of “Shawn.” I thought this was a really funny way to poke fun at them.
I think in the end I would rate this album a 4/5 because I thought most of the songs were very well thought out and it was a nice switch from her last album. It felt really fun and free. If you haven’t given it a listen, I would recommend trying to listen to it.
