Maine West defeated the girls varsity flag football team 24-19 on Sept. 17. The score was tied in the second half 14-14, but the Wolves fell in the fourth quarter. The group has a win-less record so far.
The 2025-26 school year marks the second season of girls flag football after its inaugural debut. During the offseason, major rules changes were introduced, including the allowance of screen blocking and the elimination of no-run zones. Coach Scott Baum recognized these rules and made the team play more games to get used to the changes, which he is finding to be successful despite the loss.
“We started the season out playing more games so we could get the feel for the new rule changes and scheduled fewer games and more practices towards the end. The game against Maine West was a good indication that our scheduling is paying off. We played our best football game of the year versus Maine West and we are looking to continue to improve everyday,” Baum said.
The center point for the team’s growth is building trustworthy relationships. The group is working on their bonding skills and is ready to earn their first victory.
“Through every game we’ve learned more about each other and ourselves. I believe as a team we need to focus more on communication and working together. This sport isn’t about just you it’s about the team, meaning that even if you’re not getting the ball or pulling the flag you still matter. When one person scores we all score, and as the season continues I know for sure we will excel in that area. Soon after we will be winning games and playing more confidently,” senior Idara David said.
While the season has not started off strong, the flag football team remains determined, and each game is a learning process for them.
“The team stays driven towards winning by giving effort, whether through practices or game days. There has definitely been visible progress compared to when we first started which shows how our dedication and hard work have paid off,” senior Kylie Calalang said.
The last game of the season is Sept. 30 and the girls hope to finish the year strong.
“Our goal is to improve everyday and be playing our best football at the end of the year! We had one of our better weeks last week and we are looking to improve this week with two games!,” Baum said
