The last episode of season three for the series “The Summer I turned Pretty” (TSITP) came out on Sept. 17. There was a total of 11 episodes in the season, and a new episode came out every week on each Wednesday. A lot of people were raving over this season as many were left on a cliff hanger from season two. Personally, this was my least favorite season even though it was supposed to fulfill all of the unanswered questions. However, to me I didn’t think the show completes its task.
As a Bonrad fan (team Belly and Conrad, the two main characters) I feel this season did not fill the void of their relationship potential. The first episode starts off with Jeremiah (Conrad’s brother) and Belly being together. For more than half of the season, they are together in a happy relationship. I thought this was odd because most fans knew that Conrad and Belly would end up together. I felt there was a lot of unnecessary scenes with Jeremiah and Belly, which dragged their relationship and the show on.
Honestly, there wasn’t a lot of interaction with Conrad and Belly in the season, so it felt as if something else was supposed to happen in the ending. When Conrad and Belly finally got together, it was in the last five minutes of the last episode. This was a horrible idea to do in my opinion. Before they were even officially together, Belly was living across the world from Conrad, in Paris, and he didn’t go to see her until the last episode. Keep in mind the last episode was an hour and 19 minutes. Everything in that last hour and 19 minutes was probably one of the most rushed scene of events I’ve ever watched.
One thing that has always been good about this show is the aesthetic look of it. The “summer house” is a staple in the show. It is beautiful and holds a lot of the memories for the characters. The colors and other scenes do bring the show together in a lovely way. Other than that, the character development has evolved a great deal and some other character relationships have happily come together.
Of course, in the end they do end up together, but that was it and there wasn’t much elaboration. A day after the season was over, posts about a “The Summer I Turned Pretty” movie popped up on everyone’s feed. Knowing that this is now confirmed, I hope the producer and creator of TSITP, Jenny Han, really develops the relationship and connection between Conrad and Belly, as I don’t think they were given any substance in the last episode of season three.
