Five Gourmet Foods students from Niles West went to Kendall College to compete in the FCCLA Section 5 STAR Culinary Competition on Friday, Feb. 3.
Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) is a nonprofit student organization dedicated to focusing on development and leadership skills through Family and Consumer Sciences classes.
In the event, students were randomly paired with one or two students from other schools and were given a menu. Each group had to come up with a plan on time management, and then the menu had to be cooked and plated in an hour. The students were judged individually and as groups based on how well they worked together, and they were also scored on things like knife skills and other techniques.
“Our students had a blast competing,” said Laura McCormack, a Gourmet Foods teacher who took the students to the competition.
The students who competed in the event were Ramone Lewis, Vanja Selak, Molly Morello, Laura Krikorian, and Henry Jaramillo. Scores from the event won’t be known for a few weeks.
