Summer is here, and for (almost) three glorious months we can do whatever we want. So I’ve complied a list of the biggest movies coming out this summer that you should watch, ordered by genre. Click the name of the movie to watch its trailer. Let us know what movies you’re most looking forward to this summer below in the comments!
Live Action:
“Prometheus“: The long-awaited prequel to the epic “Alien” franchise. Judging by the trailers, this is going to be the creepiest, crawliest, most terrifying one yet. This is one of those movies that you must watch at the midnight premiere. Starring Noomi Sarpace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba.
“Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter“: Yes, this actually exists. Why? I have no idea. But now that it’s been made, how can we not go see this? It may be completely ridiculous (most likely will be), but, hey, it might be cool…maybe. Starring Benjamin Walker.
“The Amazing Spider-Man“: The remake of the decade old Spider-man series that strays considerably from the known film canon. There’s no Green Goblin, no Mary-Jane Watson, and (thankfully) no James Franco. I hear a lot of people saying that this one will be bad just because it’s different from the story we know, but this follows the comic books a lot closer and truthfully, it looks much cooler. I’m looking forward to this one, let’s see if it ruins Andrew Garfield’s career. Starring Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Dennis Leary, Michael Sheen, Sally Fields.
“Savages“: A gritty crime-drama from Oliver Stone about a “business” that tries to stay independent from big shot competitors and the lengths each business will go to for what they want. This looks like one of those proper crime films where you cringe and hide your eyes then go to bed with your doors and window locked and a plastic knife under your pillow. Remember that movie “Traffic” we all had to watch in Health class about drug-trafficking in Mexico? This looks just like that, but with a little more hot blonde and a bit more sinister. Starring Taylor Kitsch, Aaron Johnson, Blake Lively, Benicio Del Toro, Salma Hayek, John Travolta.
“The Dark Knight Rises“: The sure-to-be epic finale for the Dark Knight trilogy. This is more than just an action movie, more than just superhero gadgets and explosions or good vs. evil. The Dark Knight Rises has been the light at the end of the tunnel for those who has invested the last couple years into waiting for Batman’s next appearance. Filled with human and inhuman complex characters, and helmed by an acclaimed director and brilliant writer, this is a must for comic-geeks, or really anyone who enjoys watching a truly well-made movie. Go to the midnight premiere and never leave. Starring Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy.
“The Bourne Legacy“: This is not a sequel to the Bourne Trilogy in the strictest sense. The tagline is, “There was never just one,” so I guess this about all the other Outcome agents exploited by Treadstone. I don’t know how good a Bourne movie can be without Matt Damon’s title character, but it’s definitely not going to be boring. I’d say this is an ideal summer movie. Starring Jeremy Renner, Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton.
“Total Recall“: A remake of the 1990 psychological thriller starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, where an average man goes to a “Recall facility” that implants memories because he feels something’s missing in his perfect life. After the memo. Starring Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel.
Comedy:
“Rock of Ages“: Let’s watch Tom Cruise make a total fool out of himself! A musical about God knows what using the great rocker hits of all time. I think this is supposed to be like “Fame” or “Rocky Horror Picture Show” but let’s just hope it’s not as ridiculous as Glee. Starring Diego Boneta, Julianne Hough, Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand, Tom Cruise.
“Seeking a Friend for the End of the World“: When an asteroid heads for Earth and destruction is imminent, people do crazy things. One man chooses to take a road trip to find his high school sweetheart with his troubled neighbor. This is one the movies that Steve Carrell left “The Office” for, and Keira Knightley hasn’t been in anything lately, so I’m hoping this’ll be a good one. Starring Steve Carrell, Keira Knightley.
“Ted“: Another movie to watch at midnight from the creator of Family Guy. Seth McFarlane’s feature film debut, it follows the story of a man and his best friend, who happens to be his childhood teddy bear, and the toll their friendship takes on their lives. Think of it as “Stewie and Rupert: The Movie.” Starring Seth McFarlane (voice), Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis.
“The Watch“: A comedy about a group of neighborhood watchmen who take their duties a little bit too seriously. This has all of the classic comedy stars, so I’ll be disappointed if this is bad. Starring Ben Stiller, Vince Vaugh, Jonah Hill.
Animation:
“Brave“: Pixar’s newest animation about a princess in feudal Scotland who chooses to compete for her own hand in marriage to avoid being married off to someone she doesn’t know. At one point she accidentally curses her family, and uses her tomboyish skills to find way to break the spell. This could be good. Starring Kelly Macdonald, Emma Thompson, Billy Conolly.
“Ice Age: Continental Drift“: No way this turns out well, movies strung out way past their due never do. But when you’re forced to take your little brother or sister out, you could do worse. Starring Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Denis Leary.
