Fashion students hosted a “Trashy Fashion Show” at the Holiday Inn on Thursday, Nov. 15.
The show featured more than 30 pieces of wearable art that fashion students have been preparing since late August.
“This is a green show,” said fashion instructor Kathleen Coughlin. “All of these items were re-purposed and made into new outfits for the runway show… Everything that we used was destined for the garbage. [We want to show students] that you can be glamorous and be green.”
The students used items such as paper, papier-mâchée, tops from discarded things in the trash, pop cans, fish scales, and more.
Coughlin, as well as the students, said they were very eager to see it all come together.
Junior Mehwish Ali said, “The best part of fashion is getting to see your outfits on the runway — you just feel so successful and happy, like oh my gosh, I created this.”
Though the show may have been fun to watch, there was a lot of work that went on behind the scenes.
“It really brings out your art side,” Coughlin said. “You have to use creativity. You can’t just make a pattern and sew it — you have to really think outside the box.”
Fashion design takes patience, said junior Tanya Polhovski.
“You can’t just glue it together when you mess up. It’s like a puzzle, everything has to fit together perfectly,” she said.
The next fashion show is scheduled for May.
