As part of the school’s participation in the annual “Coming Together in Skokie” celebration, students will have the opportunity to experience Greek culture on Wednesday, Feb. 6 in the IRC.
The Niles West Hellenic club will be in the IRC all day showcasing their Greek pride. The IRC will be heavily decorated with modern Greek artifacts and paintings. They will have stations for everyone to come and learn something new about the Greeks and their ancient civilizations.
“There will be many events throughout the month of February for us to represent our culture. This is kind of a kick off for International Weeks and for ‘Coming Together in Skokie’. The club members are excited to show off all their hard work they have put into the club this year,” Greek club sponsor Bill Papaioannou said.
There will be food for students to sample, and lots of entertainment. The Greek club will be dancing two traditional dances, and selling “Coming Together in Skokie” t-shirts. Free bookmarks with your name printed in Greek will also be available. Members of the Hellenic Club said they are excited to share their culture with the school and distinguish their heritage.
“Greece has probably the greatest history and culture, and we are very happy to show it to our fellow students,” junior Dimitri Savidis said.
All the activities and ideas were planned by the club members.
“I’m excited for the trivia because we made up the questions together as a club. I’m also excited to teach students how to Greek dance. It’s really fun and gives us a chance to show Niles West what we can do,” junior Dori Protofanousis said.
Teachers will be able to take their classes in to see the presentation and hopefully learn a little more about one of the many cultures here at Niles West.
The Greek club will also be performing dances at International Night on Friday, Feb.15, along with other cultures participating in the International Weeks celebration.

It’s great hearing about the Greek’s history and it’s exciting to see them perform their dances and you can tell they have a lot of pride in their culture. It’s a great chance for others to learn about their culture and celebrate their culture.

I think that what they are doing in the IRC is such a good idea to really spread the greek culture a little bit through out all of the students. It also is really nice because all of the Global Studies classes are studying Greece so it’s great for them to go and learn more of the traditions.

Hellenic/Greek Club did a fantastic job bringing together various aspects and activities based on and related to Greek culture together to showcase to students, and it was great to see a rather under-appreciated (besides in ancient history) culture brought to light. I only wish I had a chance to talk to my family about contributing ourselves – we’re Greek but I didn’t join Hellenic/Greek Club.
