For the fourth time in his four seasons of golf at Niles West, senior Nate Lee has qualified for state. For the first time in school history, however, a second West golfer has joined him: sophomore Skylar Levine.
Levine and Lee, as well as junior Bennett Underwood and senior Patrick Corlaciu, competed at sectionals and the former two made the state cut, according to head coach Mitchell Stern. Stern had nothing but praise for his two star golfers, saying ” As perfect a day as the weather was, Nate and Skylar were equally as perfect. On a tricky, unfamiliar course, they both played extremely well under the pressure of making it downstate.”
Although he’s only a sophomore, Levine still had high hopes for this season, and they didn’t stop at making it down state. “Hopefully [we finish at] a top 25 and at best we also get top 10 in all state.”
And to meet those goals, Levine has a role model in Lee, who himself was once an underclassmen competing at state, to show him the ropes. “He’s definitely taught me these past two years. He’s been a really good leader to the whole team, especially me,” he said, “and kind of explained the whole process of what I need to do.”
Lee may be serving as a leader to the team, but he is still very focused on his individual success in the state tournament in addition. He said he hasn’t taken for granted the fact that he’s a four time state-qualifier. “”It’s exciting to go four years, because some people don’t get to go once,” he said, ” so the fact that I get to go every year, it’s a lot of fun.We [tried] to make it as a team, but since we couldn’t, me and Skylar made it individually. I’m glad he’s joining me this year.”
Stern admits it’s a triumphant time for the golf team. ” Nate is making history as a 4 time state qualifier,” he said, “and Skylar is following his legacy.”
