To learn more about the French culture, the Niles West News interviewed French club member junior Christian Marin.
NWN: When was the club first founded?
French: Three years ago when I was a freshman.
NWN: How many members are in the club?
French: There are about 24 on the list. They don’t come every week, they don’t have to come every time but we encourage it.
NWN: Are all the members French speakers or required to have taken a French class before joining?
French: It’s actually not a requirement; you can join even if you don’t speak French, but the majority of the people here have taken French.
NWN: What kinds of activities is the club known for?
French: The biggest thing that we do is immersion day where we invite a bunch of the first and second year French students, and we do different activities like scavenger hunts and some other games. We try to do it all in French to help them develop their language. The other things we do a lot are crepes- you’ve probably seen it outside the cafeteria. Those are probably the two biggest things we do throughout the year. We might to to a restaurant and a market this semester.
NWN: Why did you join the club?
French: It was just something extra to do and I joined it freshman year, so it has been one of the first clubs that I joined.
NWN: What do you like the most about the French culture?
French: The food, I have to say, is the biggest thing. I mean the crepes that we make are so good.
NWN: What are your plans for international week?
French: We’re selling crepes during the crepes week and having a cheese tasting on the 11th. We’re going to have an awesome table on activities night. We’re probably going to be giving away some baguettes and Nutella. We’re also going to talk about the exchange and all the cool things we do at French club.
NWN: What is something you want people to know about French club that you think they don’t know?
French: We make a lot of food. Every other week pretty much we make something. Some of the food we made so far includes: Petit Pain au Chocolate, Buche Noel, Quiche, a lot of crepes and we are probably going to do King’s Cake during Mardi Gras.
