Sixteen students have advanced in the Poetry Out Loud competition, run by the English department, after performing in semi finals during this morning’s late start.
The finalists: Asma Akram, Chester Beck, Hayley Bramati, Paul Ceneac, Sherlina Chauhan, Amina Dzanovic, Claire Embil, Thea Gonzales, Justina Jude, Elissa Hoffman, Miranda Kang, Jessica LaMantia, Sam Noparstak, Colin Olson, Rachie Paculba, and Kate Silber.
These students will compete Wednesday, Feb. 12 in room 2040 at 3:30 p.m.
“The competition started at the school about five years ago. It is a National Organization that holds a competition every year,” English teacher Sharon Swanson said.
Sophomore Amina Dzananovic is excited and surprised at being selected.
“I’m excited and suprised since a lot of talent was shown from all the poets. I’m also excited that I get to represent Tribe Called West along with Thea and Paul. Although its a competition, I’m rooting for everyone and I wish the best for all the contenders,” Dzananovic said.
After the finals are determined, the winner will advance to the state competition.
Each winner at the state competition will get $200 and an all-expenses-paid trip with an adult chaperone to Washington to compete for the national championship. The state winner’s school gets $500 for the purchase of poetry books. The first runner-up in each state receives $100, with $200 for their school library. A total of $50,000 in awards and school stipends is awarded annually at the National Finals.
