Niles West News talked to head coach Tony Konsewicz about this year’s girls’ basketball team. The team is already off to a great start, with its first win, 38-33, last night against Hoffman Estate.
NWN: What strengths do you already see in this year’s team?
Konsewicz: The strengths in our team are cohesiveness. These girls are very close, they’re great competitors. And on the floor our biggest strength will be our team speed.
NWN: What are some goals for this year?
Konsewicz: Last week we talked to the girls about individual goals and team goals; a lot of our goals centered around winning Regional and winning Sectional and getting to the Super Sectional.
NWN: How do you expect the team to do this year compared to last year’s?
Konsewicz: Well I think we’re definitely going to win more games. We have more depth on the bench, more girls are going to be able to play this year. They’re going to make big contributions so we’re definitely looking at an improvement win-loss wise over last season.
NWN: What should Niles West look forward to this season?
Konsewicz: Niles West should look forward to a very exciting, fast-paced game of basketball. We usually have a nice crowd for girls games. They’re not going to be disappointed with this year.
NWN: What do you look forward to this season?
Konsewicz: I look forward most to coming to practice everyday and coaching our team. We have some great character kids. They’re great student athletes and I know they’re going to give us a 100% every practice and every game.
