Students enrolled in Spanish courses at Niles West had the chance to spend their spring break in Argentina on a school trip. the NWN caught up with junior Kaylie Dyer, who went on the Argentina trip, to talk about the experience.
NWN: Why did you want to go on this school trip over your spring break?
Dyer: Well, I enjoy traveling and experiencing life in other countries and I have never been to South America, so I thought that it was a once in a lifetime opportunity to get to travel there so I might as well take it.
NWN: What made the trip the best for you?
Dyer: The entire trip was very enjoyable because our days were packed from the moment we woke up to the moment our heads hit the pillow at night. From exploring the town, tango lessons, horse back riding, going to the local high school, and so much more, there was always something to keep us busy.
NWN: What was your favorite part of the trip?
Dyer: My favorite part of the trip would have to be when we attended school at the local high school. Their school is incredibly small compared to Niles West and we were able to meet a vast majority of different-aged kids. Every student was so friendly and after our three days at the school, I felt that I had made a lot of close bonds with the students there.
NWN: How were the Spanish teachers who supervised, Señora K and Señor Nowak, different on the trip compared to in the classroom?
Dyer: Going into the trip, I was already very excited that my two past Spanish teachers were coming. Over the ten days, we got to know each other to a more personal level and created memories that could never be created in a classroom.
NWN: What was your least favorite part of the trip?
Dyer: If I had to pick a least favorite thing, it would have to be the flying. The flight to Argentina is a brutal–eleven– hours and I couldn’t get comfortable at all during the flight.
NWN: Would you like to go back to Argentina?
Dyer: I would love to go back to Argentina! I still keep in touch with some of the students that I met there and I don’t want this trip to be the end. Not only would I want to go back because the experience was incredible, but I would love to go back to see the friends that I made.
NWN: If you could go back and change something about the trip, what would you change?
Dyer: I thought that the trip was amazing but if I could have changed one thing, it would have been to travel the country more. During the trip we stayed in the beautiful city of Buenos Aires, but I would have enjoyed it if we strayed outside of just that one city a little bit more.
