To honor the lives of those serving our country, Niles West will be hosting several events, including a flagpole ceremony outside the nurse’s office at 7:45 a.m. and a Niles West Military Families breakfast in the Student Commons following the ceremony on Nov. 11.
According to student activities director and creator of these events Katie Odell, Veterans Day is a very important event to honor our soldiers.
“[I believe that we celebrate this holiday] to honor those who have sacrificed their own lives for us,” Odell said.
Odell also has a personal connection to this holiday, as her grandfather and uncle are also veterans and were on the honor flight from St. Louis this past year.
Odell is also not the only one that feels Veterans Day and its activities are important; students do too.
“I feel that the fact that Niles West is honoring veterans is a very patriotic thing to do and it shows people that we care,” freshman Rheannon Rivera said.
Students also feel that these events are beneficial to the families as well.
“I think it’s great because military people might be sad that their loved ones passed away, so they can get support [from these activities],” freshman Amshah Mushtaq said.
