Without a doubt, 2016 is the year of revivals, reboots, and spin offs. As beloved shows ended and disappeared, never to be seen again, 2016 came rolling in, announcing all the 80s, 90s, and 00s classics that would be revived. In 2016, Full House became Fuller House, with DJ Tanner following in the steps of her father, trying to raise her three kids with the help of her sister Stephanie and her best friend (like father, like daughter, am I right?). In 2016, David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson came back to our television screens, starring as Mulder and Scully from X-Files, the obscure show that came out of nowhere and captured everyone’s hearts. 2016 is also the year Prison Break returns to our television and thankfully, will be ignoring the last two episodes of season four.
Yeah, okay, X-Files is the longest running sci-fi show on television. And maybe, Full House is undoubtedly one of the best shows of the late 80s, early 90s, and sure Prison Break is the most heart-wrenching crime drama you’ll ever watch, but there is one revival that is arguably the most anticipated one out of all, especially after a disastrous season seven.
If you haven’t guessed it by now, I’m talking about Gilmore Girls. Fast-paced, witty, and humorous, the rapid talking, coffee obsessed Lorelei (Lauren Graham) and Rory (Alexis Bledel) Gilmore are coming back for one more season, all thanks to Netflix.
Gilmore Girls is set in the (unfortunately) fictional town of Stars Hollow, Connecticut and follows the life of mother and daughter Lorelei and Rory Gilmore as they deal with love, friendship, and family. Lorelei, a single mother and manager of the Independence Inn, does her best to put her daughter Rory through school. Ultimately, she is forced to ask her wealthy parent, Richard and Emily Gilmore for help. Estranged from her parents ever since she ran away when she became pregnant at sixteen, Lorelei’s arguments and head-butting with Emily at Friday night dinners became iconic scenes as the show aired.
As Lorelei does her best to put Rory through school, both mother and daughter fall in love. Rory, throughout the series meets Dean, a sweet, small town boy, and everything a first love should be portrayed by pre-Supernatural Jared Padalecki. Along with Dean, Rory meets Logan: rich, arrogant, and spontaneous Logan portrayed by Matt Czuchry.
Now, I know most of you are thinking “Logan didn’t come after Dean,” and you would be right. Logan didn’t come after Dean, but the best guy of all did — witty, sarcastic to no end, and brilliant Jess Mariano. Jess was your typical leather jacket wearing bad boy, who at first, seemed unfit for innocent Rory, but soon had us swooning. Jess, portrayed by Milo Ventimiglia, was everything Rory needed. Unparalleled in his stubbornness, Jess pushed Rory like no one else before and challenged her in everything she did. Jess matched Rory’s brilliance, bonding over their love for books, and movies. Although he was troubled and unreliable, once he got his act together, Jess Mariano became all that Rory knew he could be.
Lorelei, on the other hand, had a few relationships on the show, there was always once guy you held a torch for and you knew deep down Lorelei did too. Luke, owner of Luke’s Diner, was the brooding, grumpy sort of guy who was secretly a giant teddy bear on the inside. A father figure for Rory and supplier of coffee and food, Luke captured our heart with his plaid shirts and baseball hats.
Returning for four 90 minute episodes, Gilmore Girls will be returning on Netflix with each episode spanning over a year and titled after the four seasons: Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer. All characters are set to return for the revival and original creator and producer Amy Sherman-Palladino will be returning, finally revealing the three words the beloved show was meant to end with. 2017, here I come!
