Niles West Girls Varsity Soccer beat rival Niles North on Tuesday, April 5, 2016 in the annual Skokie Skirmish. Niles West hosted Niles North, for one of the most anticipated games of the year.
The final score came out to be 2-0, and head coach Brett Clish was happy with the way the team played.
“I feel that the team played really well [on Tuesday]. We kept good control of the ball and kept them from getting much rhythm. We did a very good job of controlling the middle field and finishing some of our shots,” he said.
With the win, the Wolves came out with the Traveling Trophy. Seniors Nichole Lopatin and Emela Mehicevic made sure that the famous trophy stayed here at West by scoring the only two goals the entire game.
“It’s the best feeling keeping the trophy after the game, especially because Niles North has never had the girls soccer trophy,” Mehicevic said.
For the seven years West and North have battled for the trophy, West has won five times and tied twice with the Vikings.
Most of the varsity team is made up of seniors, so for these players, the game was a bittersweet one.
“The game went very well, but it was sad. After this I’ll never be playing North again,” senior Francesca Erturk said.
At the end of the night, there is nothing left but kind words and great memories.
“This game was so bittersweet, it made me realize how much I’m going to miss playing at Niles West. As a team we play very well, part of that is coming out with a strong mentality, once we’re on the field we know what our job is. And that is to win,” Mehicevic said.
