Coming off of a hot start in the first tournament of the season, the Varsity Boys Golf team is looking to go deep this season. Coach Mitch Stern is very excited to lead a senior-heavy golf team with lots of promise. The NWN sat down with Stern and got a feel for this year’s team.
NWN: What are you most looking forward to this season?
Stern: I am excited for five amazing seniors to be on the team. They are hard workers. The team is going to be led by senior captain Jake Peiser. The other seniors are Michael Hyman, Tony Dynek, Elijah Lancaster, and Desmond O’Shaughnessy.
NWN: Who are some of the other key players on the team?
Stern: One junior on the team this year, George Hatzopoulos, two sophomores, Evan Han and Scott Klaisubhan, and even freshman Sean Perrin is being pulled up to the varsity squad.
NWN: What are your expectations for the season?
Stern: We always shoot for ending up in the top half of the conference out of the six teams. We would like to make it out of regionals as a team and the main thing is you want to play your best golf by the end of the season. We just want to peak at the right time.
NWN: What is special about this year’s team in particular that is different from years past?
Stern: I usually don’t have five seniors on the team, so having more leadership is a great thing. The team will get better this year because of the maturity level and veteran status of a lot of these golfers. My feeling is that the team sooner than later is going to all come together. We are counting on these five guys to lead the charge.
With such a well-rounded team this year, watch out for big things from the boys golf team and wish them luck on Saturday, Aug. 20 at the CSL showcase in Lake Bluff.
