What started as unnoticed protest has become the top sports topic which has ESPN, CBS and all the other major networks covering it. Colin Kaepernick not standing for the national anthem has the nation torn apart. There are those who support his decision and join him, and those who believe he’s disrespecting everything the flag stands for.
Colin Kaepernick is doing what he thinks is right. He knows he has a voice and he’s using it to get everyone informed and to try and make a change because police brutality is wrong; it needs to be changed and Colin won’t stop unless there is a significant change.
He isn’t scared of the death threats and says that if they act on those death threats, then his movement would move at a much greater speed than it is now but acknowledges that isn’t his ideal plan.
Jeremy Lane cornerback for Seattle Seahawks told reporters “I just like what Kaepernick is doing and I’m standing behind him, it’s something I plan on keep on doing, until I feel like justice is being served.”
He has gained a lot of support with his teammates, news networks, players ranging from high school to NFL and President Obama. Naturally he has his critics like Kate Upton, Trent Dilfer, Drew Brees and others. Soccer player Megan Rapinoe was quoted saying “being a gay American, I know what it means to look at the flag and not have it protect all of your liberties.”
One of the biggest points for Kapernick is the shooting of Terence Crutcher, a 40 year old black man who was shot while unarmed by police in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It just adds more fuel to the fire because it’s putting perspective into what Kapernick is fighting for and why he won’t stop until there is a remarkable change.
Kapernick has outlined a plan that has him donating one million over 10 months and is currently trying to make a website, so the public can follow where the money is spent.
He wants to give back to the community and he wants to set a good example because athletes are one of the biggest influences to young teens. If they see what his protest is about they can either join him, like some have already, or try to help out their community too.
