Fall Orchestra Takes the Stage Tonight

Fall Orchestra Takes the Stage Tonight

If you’re looking for something to do on a Wednesday night, you’re in  luck. All three orchestra groups will be performing in a concert: the philharmonic orchestra, the concert orchestra, and the symphonic, according to orchestra director Steven Katz.

The fall orchestra concert is set to take place tonight, Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium. According to Katz, these are the hardest pieces the orchestra has performed.

“It’s going to be a beautiful concert, we’re doing amazing music in this one. It’s going to be really exciting, it’s really beautiful, and some of the hardest stuff we’ve ever performed here at Niles West,” Katz said.

Members of the orchestra have worked hard and are excited to showcase their work, which includes some difficult pieces.

“We are super excited to showcase the music we’ve been rehearsing. I’m looking forward to playing one of the pieces by Mahler,” senior and violin player Kristeen Bebla said. “It’s a difficult piece because it’s really slow and the whole orchestra has to keep the right tempo and not go too fast. It’ll be interesting to see how many people shed a tear during the concert because all the music we are playing is more on the romantic and sad side. We worked hard to get every aspect of the pieces the way the composers want us to play them, so we hope everyone will enjoy it.”

This will be Bebla’s fourth and final fall orchestra concert, and the years of dedication her and her peers have put in will shine through. The orchestra members put in a lot of work rehearsing, but feel as though they don’t get the same recognition as athletes do.

“These guys [spent] every day since the beginning of the year rehearsing for these concerts, and a lot of people are getting private lessons and practicing for hours at home,” senior Sneha George, also a violin player, said. “The sad thing is a lot of people don’t show up to these types of events and the music department ends up not getting enough recognition like sports do.”
