After a long off-season, one of Niles West’s finest spring sports teams is back and more ready than ever. The Niles West girls varsity soccer team consists of girls from all grade levels, but one thing they all have in common is the love and passion they have for the game. It’s hard to find someone on that team who hasn’t been playing soccer since a young age. The girls have been working hard in the off-season, and now they’re ready to get back on the field.

This is coach Milo Cejovic‘s fourth year coaching girls at Niles West, but it will be his first year as head coach for the varsity girls.

“I love the game of soccer. I love seeing young players push themselves to new levels and seeing them get better. I love building a great team spirit that helps transcend performance levels,” Cejovic said. “Sports are a great way to see young people be passionate about something they love.”

Freshman and varsity player Aila Durakovic is ready for a season filled with new bonds and personal goals.

“My goal for this season is to try and start on the field. Also I would love to form stronger bonds with all the girls,” Durakovic said. “I think chemistry is very important when playing a team sport. It helps everyone on the field when there is a connection between everyone.”

Junior Jacque Karp has been playing soccer ever since she was a little girl. The love she has for the game is endless.

“My favorite [thing about] the game is that there’s always something happening, and that you always have to be on your feet. Being aware of where the ball is at all times and what you would do if you got the ball is a very important aspect of the game,” Karp said. “I absolutely love soccer. Not only has it helped me learn how to be a team player, but it has also given me the chance to meet some great girls and coaches.”

This year’s varsity team is evidently filled with passionate players and coaches, and this will hopefully take them far in the upcoming season.

“We think we can surprise some people with our performances this season. We have some hungry girls that want to make a statement. We want to evolve as individuals and as a collective unit. A regional title is our priority,” Cejovic said.

Come out to support the varsity girls at their first game on our home turf on Tuesday, March 14 at 5:45 p.m. as they face off against Highland Park.
