Fox News: The Real Fake News

By Zubair Muhammad, Staff Writer

Fake news — it’s been in the spotlight lately used by our president to call out unreliable news sources, or, the media, which our president loves attacking.

In fact, the week before midterms, Donald Trump called the Associate Press fake news and “the true enemy of the American people,” in a tweet on October 29.

Similarly, Fox News host Sean Hannity refers to the Mueller investigation as a “witch hunt”  and claims “fake news” is out to the get the president.

Be that as it may, I am not furious by the fact that Trump hates CNN, or calls the New York Times fake news just because they don’t support his narrative. What irritates me is when Fox News calls out the media for being fake news.

First things first, Fox News is a part of the media. For them to be attacking news sources is not only ironic but hypocritical.

Although the media generally does have a liberal tilt, that does not make it fake or any less credible. For instance, Pulitzer Prize reporters Michael Schmidt and Maggie Haberman wrote an investigative article for The New York Times in August 2018 about White House Counsel Don McGahn cooperating with the Mueller Probe regarding a possible Russian interference in the 2018 election.

In response, the President tweeted a series of attacks on the infamous publication.

“The Failing New York Times wrote a story that made it seem like the White House Council [sic] had TURNED on the President, when in fact it is just the opposite – & the two Fake reporters knew this,” Trump tweeted. “This is why the Fake News Media has become the Enemy of the People. So bad for America!”

Just because your news coverage is critical does not make it fake, but rather it shows Trump’s stubborn character. And as usual, Fox News was there to back him up.

Here’s what Fox News correspondent and former judge Jeanine Pirro has to say about the media and liberals.

“To all those Trump-hating ‘demon rats’ and the mainstream media, keep up the antics,” Pirro said. “You’re all losers. Sore losers. Stupid losers. Too dumb to even know that you’re losing.”

How can Fox news attack news that isn’t fair and balanced when 99% of their programming is right wing opinionated, ardently conservative, and openly hateful as seen by the rhetoric their “journalists” use to describe their opponents?

So just how credible is Fox itself? According to a scorecard by politifact, only 17% of all statements made on air by Fox News, Pundits, or Business personalities on the show have been rated as true.

Here are some infamous quotes from Fox personalities that will have your head shaking: Greg Gutfeld says “Ted Kennedy met with the KGB in order to beat Ronald Reagan in 1984,”, Jon Voight says “the word progressive… was created as a substitute for ‘communist’,” Gavin Mcinnes says “Fifty percent of murders in Texas have been linked to illegal aliens,” Bill O’Reilly says “Muslim nations did not “call out” the people who celebrated the 9/11 attacks.” The list goes on but the point is Fox News is the biggest distributor of fake news. Period.

Not only has Fox News shifted so far right, but they have begun a witch hunt on other mainstream media sources who don’t kiss up to the president as much as they do. It doesn’t matter if Donald Trump nukes half of the world, or starts a trade war with China, or leads the country into a recession, Fox News will still bend the truth to defend him. It’s basically become state programmed TV.
