When Glee started two years ago it became an instant sensation. The show is about a high school glee club and the “losers” who are in it. The show might not have the most consistent plot lines or writing, but the music is fun, the characters are so flawed it’s impossible not to love them, and (most importantly) the show makes it’s viewers feel accepted.
The season two finale was by far one of the better episodes in the inconsistent second season. Although some were upset the McKinley High Glee Club didn’t win nationals, the club just was not there yet. The characters have to grow some more before they will be ready to win the whole thing. However, what made most everybody happy was Rachel and Finn getting back together, the token couple of the show have been through a rough couple of seasons, but they finally seem to be getting their priorities straight. Kurt and Blaine saying I love you to each other was amazing. The lovable Glee club leader/ Spanish teacher, Mr. Schuester decided to stay at McKinley, Quinn chopped off her hair, and Brittney and Santana made some major progress in their relationship.
The first episode of the newest 3rd season felt like we were back in season 1 again. Let me tell you, it was a relief. The jokes were hilarious, the characters were actually in character, and I hardly ever stopped smiling. Okay, sure, Quinn had a major freak out, died her hair pink, got an “ironic tattoo of Ryan Secrest” and is a member of a group called the skanks, but she’s finally having the flip she should have had after she gave up her child.
Plus, Kurt and Rachel have the friendship that I always thought they should have (after all, they’re practically the same person). The couples were excellent: Finn and Rachel were officially together, Mercedes has a new extremely large football player boyfriend that I can’t hardly believe, Will and Emma are living together, and Kurt and Blaine are as adorable as ever. Within 15 minutes of the start of the episode, after a totally cute and loving talk between the two boyfriends at their favorite coffee shop, Blaine makes his transfer to McKinley. Have I mentioned that they’re adorable yet?
Then there is Head Cheerio’s Coach, Sue, who manages to ruin everything for our lovable Glee Club. Mr. Schuester announced at the beginning of the episode that he was setting up old pianos around the school in order to gain interest in Glee. Every time a member sees a purple piano, they have to sing a song. Naturally, this goes horrible. Sue immediately sets up a plan to destroy the pianos. Some times viciously ripping up the strings, and some times setting up secret missions with her Cherrios to destroy them. And get this: Sue is running for office. Her platform? Getting rid of the arts at schools.
I will not reveal any more plot now, but I thought the episode showed some real potential for Glee to have a good season. Some people were disappointed that Sam (Chord Overstreet) did not return to the show this year, but personally I think that his character was mediocre and the show will be better without him. Overall, I was pretty happy with this episode, and I hope that the show stays this way, and does not slip into the questionable non-plot episodes of last season.
