The IRC hosted Break for Books Friday, Oct. 7 for sophomores. All sophomore English classes attended the event to listen to book reviews, have book discussions, pick out a book, and also have a snack.
Break for Books is an opportunity for students to check out books that they never thought would interest them, said Sherry Baehr, head librarian.
“[Students] get to explore genres that they might have not known that they were interested in before,” Baeher said
Break for Books is a way to expose students to reading. More than 40 books were for sale at a low cost for students, according to Baeher. Book prices started as low as $1.
“Our goal is to get all sophomores to walk out of the IRC with a book in their hands,” says Baehr.
Sophomores agree that the price is very tempting.
“I’m not much of a reader, but for $1, I think I can find something that I will enjoy,” says sophomore Devin Stafen.
“This years was kinda boring but I loved last years. It gives students a great opportunity, specially the ones that don’t have a lot of money and can’t afford it. It also encourages them to read and that’s great,” says sophomore Jessie Amga.
“It made me want to buy the all the books. It seemed like there was a story behind the story. The school should keep hosting events like this because it gives kids like me who don’t normally read a chance,” says sophomore Meghan Laude.
Don’t worry freshmen; there will be another Break for Books just for you in May.
