Apocalypse Blues: A Playlist While In Quarantine

By Kalyn Zwik, Staff Writer

With much of the world under quarantine as COVID-19, commonly known as the coronavirus, one of the things you can do to fill in your time is listening to music. Here are the top recommendations for some classic and new songs to keep you going during the quarantine.

1. “Stay Away” by Nirvana

One of the best ways to stop the spread of the virus is to practice social distancing. In the words of Kurt Cobain, please, stay away.

2. “Monotony” by Preoccupations

Life in quarantine can truly be full of monotony. Try to pick up a new hobby while you have the extra time to keep your brain stimulated.

3. “School’s Out” by Alice Cooper

While we don’t know exactly when we’ll be going back to school, we can assume it’ll be until at least April 30th, according to the governor’s executive order.

4. “U Can’t Touch This” by MC Hammer

I’ll say it again: practicing social distancing is the best way to stop the virus. Try to minimize contact with others, and avoid touching a lot of things while at the store or other places.

5. “Oblivion” by Grimes

Sometimes, in the face of adversity, you really just need to let your hair down and dance! This eerily danceable track, off of Grimes’ Visions, is just the song for that.

6. “Mystery Disease” by MGMT

Currently, a vaccine has not been fully tested for the coronavirus, but there have recently been breakthroughs in the development of a drug to fight the disease.

7. “Isolation” by Joy Division

We’re all definitely feeling a little isolated. This time can be especially tough for those with mental health issues, so if you or anyone you know is struggling don’t be afraid to reach out!

8. “It’s the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)” by R.E.M.

While some of the lyrics about the Soviet Union may be a bit outdated, the song still hits home. It may be the end of the world, but we’ll all be fine.

9. “Stayin’ Alive” by Bee Gees

Let’s take a moment to shout out all those brave medical professionals on the frontlines fighting the pandemic. If you are able to, please consider making a donation to any of these fine charities.

10. “Apocalypse” by Cigarettes After Sex

I think we can all connect to the drearier vibe of the song, featuring Greg Gonzalez’s androgynous vocals and the dreamy instrumentation.

11. “I Need a Doctor” by Dr. Dre feat. Eminem and Skylar Grey

Some of the symptoms of COVID-19 include a fever, a cough, and shortness of breath. If you feel any of this, you might want to consider getting tested.

12. “Every Breath You Take” by The Police

The federal government has recommended covering your face when out in the public to prevent the spread of COVID-19, as it is a respiratory illness that is spread through the air.
