A Look at the Incoming PlayStation 5

The PlayStation 5 is bringing the next generation of console gaming with its release on November 12 this year. Designed to be played on TVs with up to 4K in resolution, the PS5 comes with the introduction of RTX support, 3D audio integration, and much more. With the PS5’s release date coming soon, here are some of the console’s features to be looking out for.

1. New user interface

With the new PS5 comes a new user interface, along with new layouts for the home and explore pages. The home page is now integrating game hubs complete with videos, stories, and DLCs. Additionally, the explore page, also available on the PlayStation app, is now including updates on games and game development that each user follows.

“PlayStation team members from all around the world worked to deliver a PS5 experience that is completely centered around you, connecting you with a great play and a passionate community of gamers,” head of PlayStation’s platform planning and management teams Hideaki Nishino said.

2. Introducing cards

The PlayStation 5 is also introducing “cards” to the new console, which are built-in widgets that can be pinned, positioned, and repositioned onscreen. Two of these cards include “activity cards” and “chat cards”. Capable of estimating playtimes, level-jumping, and giving in-game help, activity cards were designed with the objective of streamlining the PS5 gaming experience. Alongside activity cards, chat cards are capable of screen-sharing and voice chatting.

3. Accessories for the PS5

Also planned to release alongside the PlayStation 5 is a range of PS5-compatible accessories, such as a two-controller charging station, an HD camera, a media remote, and, most importantly, the Pulse 3D wireless headset & the DualSense controller. With the Pulse headset comes 3D audio integration, as PlayStation brings Tempest, a 3D audio engine, to console gaming. In addition, the DualSense controller features motion sensors, with haptic feedback and dynamic triggers allowing for levels of resistance during gameplay. The controller also features improvements in levels of comfort, response time, and controller grip. Together, the Pulse headset and the DualSense controller will make for an all-new immersiveness in console gaming.

“We want gamers to feel like the controllers are an extension of themselves when they’re playing,” Nishino said about the DualSense controller. “So much so that they forget it’s even in their hands.”

However, this new-age gaming console comes with a price. With the standard version running at $499.99 and the diskless version running at $399.99, the PS5 is anything but accessible. This year, PlayStation users will have to choose between staying with the PS4 for free and paying to migrate to the PS5.
