Top 5 Mainline Pokémon Games

By Gabrielle Feliciano, Staff Writer

Last week, Nintendo launched the first trailers of Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, the remake games of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. Set to release sometime this year, Pokémon Shining Diamond and Brilliant Pearl are what Pokémon fans have been waiting for since the original games, Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, released in 2006. With two new additions coming soon, the following are, in my opinion, the five best (mainline) Pokémon games, ranked.

5. Pokémon Sun & Moon (2016)

The first games to be released as part of the seventh generation of Pokémon games, Pokémon Sun and Moon, take place in the Alola region. Pokémon Sun and Moon (as well as Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon) are some of the most underrated Pokémon games, with an underrated story and characters overcast by an overrated gameplay experience.

4. Pokémon HeartGold & SoulSilver (2009)

Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver are remakes of Pokémon Gold and Silver, also released as part of the fourth generation of Pokémon games. Taking place in the Johto region (and later, the Kanto region), Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver more than live up to the names of their original games.

3. Pokémon Black 2 & White 2 (2012)

The sequel games to Pokémon Black and White, Pokémon Black 2, and White 2 are the first Pokémon games to be sequels to their predecessors. With all-new towns, routes, and more, Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 truly are the second part of the story that began in Pokémon Black and White.

2. Pokémon Platinum (2008)

A retelling of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, Pokémon Platinum takes place in the same region (the Sinnoh region) as both Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. However, improvements in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl’s storytelling place Pokémon Platinum above its predecessors, with said improvements including a better story, characters, and so on.

1. Pokémon Black & White (2010)

The first games to be released as part of the fifth generation of Pokémon games, Pokémon Black and White are the first Pokémon games to challenge the foundation of the Pokémon franchise itself the morality of catching Pokémon. Taking place in the Unova region, Pokémon Black and White boasts the best story, characters, and soundtrack of all of the Pokémon games.
