Top 5 Upcoming Anime of Summer 2021

By Gabrielle Feliciano, Staff Writer

As the school year comes to an end, summer begins. And, with the start of summer comes an all-new season of anime. The following are, in my opinion, the top five anime coming out this summer, ranked.

5. “Love Live! Superstar!!”

This summer, the Love Live! franchise returns with an all-new series titled “Love Live! Superstar!!.” Directed by Takahiko Kyougoku, “Love Live! Superstar!!” follows the story of five girls (Chisato Arashi, Sumire Heanna, Kanon Shibuya, Tang Keke and Ren Hazuki) attending high school together. The girls must navigate their way to stardom with neither upperclassman nor alumni to guide them.

4. “My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! (Season 2)”

The second season of “My Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!” returns this summer with an all-new season. Directed by Keisuke Inoue, the story follows noblewoman Katarina Claes, the villainess of otome game Fortune Lover in this life and a Fortune Lover-obsessed high school girl in her past life. Since all of the game’s endings lead to her own doom, Katerina must find an ending that leads to happiness, instead— for herself and her newfound companions.

3. “Aquatope of White Sand”

One life-changing summer, Kukuru Misakino, a senior in high school who works at the local aquarium, meets Fuuka Miyazawa, a Tokyo idol who’s run away from home. Directed by Toshiya Shinohara, “Aquatope of White Sand” is Kukuru and Fuuku’s love story, following the two as they overcome both internal and external hardship together— all while the aquarium’s closing draws nearer and nearer.

2. “Higurashi When They Cry: Sotsu”

“Higurashi When They Cry” returns this summer with “Higurashi When They Cry: Sotsu,” an all-new addition to the franchise. Directed by Keiichiro Kawaguchi, “Higurashi When They Cry: Sotsu” is a direct sequel to “Higurashi When They Cry: Gou,” the previous iteration of the  franchise. As such, the story will follow the same characters, plots, et cetera of its predecessor.

1. “The Case Study of Vanitas”

Noé Archiviste is on a quest to find the Book of Vanitas—a grimoire with the power to determine the fate of all vampires—when he meets Vanitas— the human “vampire doctor” who inherited it from Vanitas, the vampire of legend, themselves. Directed by Tomoyuki Itamura, “The Case Study of Vanitas” follows the story of Noé, Vanitas, and their companions, as Noé attempts to discover the true nature of the accursed tome.
