Von Steuben’s opening serve into the net set the tone for the entire Girls Volleyball regional semi-final contest versus Von Steuben Tuesday, Oct. 25. The Wolves defeated the Panthers handily, defeating them 25-18 in the first game and 25-14 in the second.
Both games were marked by exceptional performances from senior Milena Zalloni, who had numerous spikes for points, frequently set up by junior Felicia Phan. Once during the first game, the Wolves scored six unanswered points.
Through continually spiking into great positions and Von Steuben having to answer with athletic digs, the Panthers were soon tired out. When the rare occurrence of a Von Steuben spike happened (there were two whiffs), it was well defended by the Wolves. At one point, junior Molly Kleppin made a tremendous dig by merely laying her hand on the floor under the ball.
“We played hard and dominated from the beginning to the end. We’ve kind of struggled with that this season, since most games this year, we’ve started off slow, so the girls really stepped up,” she said.
The Wolves play Loyola in the Regional Final tonight at 6 at Niles West.
