HBO’s Euphoria Comes Back Deeper and Darker in the Second Season
Feb 18, 2022
If you have been active on TikTok lately, then you might have come across several hashtags about season two of Euphoria, the HBO Max original series. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the show, it follows a group of high school students through their experiences of identity, trauma, drugs, friendships and love.
By the end of season one, [ended off] with character Jules Vaughn is stuck in strained relationship with Rue Bennett, Cassie Howard getting an abortion and Maddy Perez taking a controversial CD from her on and off boyfriend, Nate Jacobs.
The main character Rue is a 17 year old struggling with a drug addiction. After the death of her father, she copes with drugs which becomes a serious problem. After her fathers death, she turns to drugs to escape from reality, which backfires as she becomes more miserable and ends up going to rehab, then relapsing. Since her judgement is off, she ruins friendships and relationships throughout her journey and ends up seriously hurting the ones that care about her most.
Along with her journey, she has friends that try to keep her sober such as Jules, who is also her lover. Although Jules may seem like a good person, I personally don’t like her because of her hypocritical views. A lot of the things that Rue wants to do that Jules disapproves of, Jules does behind her back. I think Jules holds a grudge against Rue because of Jules’ relationship with her mom, who’s also struggling with a drug addiction. Throughout this season, Jules stays by Rue’s side, but with their new friend Elliot.
As the season continues, a toxic love triangle is formed between Nate, Cassie and Maddy, which includes a lot of secrets and disloyalty. As Maddy and Nate are broken up this season, her best friend Cassie exposes her feeling towards Nate and they end up forming a secret relationship.
The plot this season definitely lies around lies and betrayal. So many relationships are broken and so many unexpected ones are made. The show surprised me more and more every week when every new episode came out. I would rate this season a solid 9/10. Apart from the fact that it sucks waiting for each new episode, I love this new plot and all the drama that comes with it. I don’t recommend it for people who don’t like to watch mature shows because it gets very deep, very quick. There are some sensitive topics talked about in the show that can make people feel uncomfortable or uneasy. Overall, this season makes your heart stop, your mouth drop, and your stomach turn, it is that intense.
The next episode of Euphoria will stream this Sunday at 8 pm.
