Girls Volleyball Defeats Evanston
Oct 4, 2022
As varsity girls volleyball is halfway through their season, they celebrate their 25th game with a big win against the Evanston Wildkits. Tuesday night’s game was a teacher appreciation game. Each player recognized a teacher or staff member in the building who benefited their lives in some way. Thank you posters were made by the girls with the teachers’ names and were posted around the walls of the gym. All teachers came and supported their students, making sure they bring some luck to the team.
The game started with senior Victoria Kutkovska serving first. Balls were being set, bumped, passed and blocked throughout the game. Amazing points were made and some little mistakes occurred, but the wolves pushed through and fought until the end, winning the first set 25-19 and the second 25-21.
Coach Stacy Roth, reveals her thoughts on the team’s game play and what is needed to be worked on to be prepared for the next couple of games.
“We need to talk a little bit more. We kind of sat back a little for a couple of points, so just being on the attack always. But I think they turned it on when they needed to and it was a big win because now our first round is done, this puts us in the top 3 for conference, so this was a big win for them today,” Roth said.
In the stands, the audience was on the edge of their seats, long rallies were being played and scores were tight. The theme for the game was Hawaiian, so the audience was dressed up in their best Hawaiian gear. Brightly colored leis were passed out to the crows by the JV girls to bring the spirit up.
The audience loved the theme, junior Lourdes Sheeno commented on the vibe from the stands. “I enjoyed how everyone participated and dressed up. There were a group of boys in the corner wearing a bunch of Hawaiian stuff, so I think it was really fun that we have a really good school spirit and everyone contributed,” Sheeno said.
The girls worked as hard as they could to not only make their team proud but their school as well. Middle hitter Mia Niketic tells us about what the win meant to her, “Today was a mandatory win for us to be able to be seated in the top three for conference. I think we came hungry and we came ready to fight. There were a few dips, but altogether I think we pushed and got that dub,” Niketic said.
As the girls continue on in their season, they hope that they will stay top three and eventually bring home the first-place conference trophy.
