Niles West’s third annual Homeroom Competitions are well on their way and will continue until the week before Winter Break.
Homeroom Competitions began three years ago in 2008 as a way to bring homerooms together and to facilitate community building within homerooms and the school.
“It gives each individual homeroom something to work together on. Call it a bonding experience,” said science teacher Anthony Serafini, who is one of the staff members organizing the competitions.
The prize for the winner of the tournament is a trophy, which later gets engraved with the name of the winning homeroom. The homeroom who wins the competition hangs onto the trophy until the next year. Senior homerooms have won the competitions for the past two years.
All homerooms are to participate and are put into brackets. Each homeroom must set up a competition time on their own with another homeroom. Each homeroom that wins the duel moves on and goes against the winner of another homeroom duel.
Homeroom Competitions this year started with the classic “Pass the Pumpkin” challenge. Other challenges to come are the Paper Airplane and the Turkey Bowl. The final competition is during the Winter Assembly and is a surprise.
