The holidays are a season of joy and happiness, but it can be one of the worst months for those living in the Midwest. Although snow can bring feelings of comfort, the reality of it sucks, and the only real thing you will be facing is cold. Luckily, if you’re not planning on going out, you can always watch some of these iconic holiday movies.

  1. Home Alone

To start off, “Home Alone” has to be one of the most iconic Christmas movies. If you’re unfamiliar with the movie, it features an eight-year-old boy,` Kevin McCallister, played by Macaulay Culkin, who acts out the night before a family trip to Paris and is sent to sleep in the attic. When the power turns off the night before, the family misses their alarm clock leaving them to rush to the airport; however, when they arrived, they realized they left Kevin at the house. While Kevin’s parents are freaking out about him being home alone, Kevin couldn’t have asked for anything better until two con men try to rob the house. In order to prevent this from happening, Kevin sets up multiple traps to prevent the men from coming in and taking anything.

2. Elf

Aside from “Home Alone,” “Elf” has to be a comedic winter classic. The movie revolves around Buddy, played by Will Ferrell, who was accidentally transported to the North Pole as a toddler and raised to adulthood with Santa’s elves. Since Buddy is so different from his peers, he decides to travel to New York in search of his real dad. When Buddy finds his dad, he tries to build a relationship with him, but it’s difficult to do so because his father is a strict businessman while Buddy, has many childlike qualities.

3. Love Hard

If you’re into romantic comedy, “Love Hard” is just the movie for you. Natalie, played Nina Dobrev, tries to take a shot at love, but her world comes crashing down when she learns she’s been catfished by this guy Josh, played by Jimmy O. Yang, she’d been talking to on a dating app. She learns he used a picture of his best friend Tag, Darren Barnet, as his profile picture. Although Josh catfished Natalie, he still makes a deal with her: If she stays for a week and pretends to be his girlfriend to make his family happy, he’ll help her win over Tag. Since Natalie is desperate to find love, she agrees to stay and play this out.

4. Holidate

Another romantic comedy, “Holidate” is about a single woman, Sloane Benson played by Emma Roberts, who is always getting picked on by her family to date. Luckily, she meets Jackson, played by Luke Bracey, who also finds himself needing a date for the holidays. This being said, these two strangers make a deal to be each other’s platonic plus-ones all year long for holidays, only to catch feelings along the way.

If you’re a fan of comedies, I would definitely recommend checking these movies out. They are all mostly family-friendly, and they will never fail to make you laugh.
