It’s a different kind of burger joint. With more variety on its menu than McDonald’s and Burger King, Culver’s has left its distinct mark in the fast food world. Previously, it used to be an elusive burger joint, too. Having originated in Wisconsin, most people would only run into Culver’s when driving through that state.
Once Culver’s came to Illinois, the only nearby ones weren’t exactly in our backyard — they were located in suburbs like Rosemont, Mt. Prospect, and Franklin Park. With these locations, frequent trips would not be possible. However, on Wed., Nov. 23, that changed with the opening of a new Culver’s in Morton Grove.
Let me just say that I absolutely love Culver’s. It has much more variety than other fast food places. For instance, if I don’t want a burger, I can easily pick something else from the menu. However, my trips to Culver’s used to be limited. I would go to the ones in Rosemont or Mt. Prospect, but only if I had any business in the area. Now, however, I can have a fresh ButterBurger, and it’s only five minutes away from my house.
I was lucky enough to attend the grand opening of Culver’s, and it was a complete madhouse. There were lines snaking out the door and around the building, and the drive-thru was double-parked. Now, almost three weeks later, it’s still crowded. The drive-thru isn’t double-parked anymore, but is still busy; and while the lines are no longer out the door, there’s still enough people there who want to get their Culver’s fix.
I’ve gone to Culver’s two times since its initial opening. The first time, I had a Sourdough Melt ($2.99 for a single patty). It’s a hamburger patty, grilled onions, and cheddar cheese housed between two slices of sourdough bread. (For those of you who don’t like cheddar, you can get the Wisconsin Swiss Melt instead, which is also $2.99 for a single patty. It’s the same as the Sourdough Melt, but with Swiss cheese and rye bread instead of cheddar cheese and sourdough bread.) It’s one of my favorite items on the menu, but the thing is the onions and cheese can make the sandwich feel kind of heavy. It’s definitely not something for a small appetite.
The next time, I had the Mushroom & Swiss ButterBurger ($4.59, since it was a SnackPak). I’ve had the original ButterBurger before, which is the trademark burger of Culver’s. However, I’d been wanting to try this specific kind of ButterBurger for a while. The mushrooms were not at all rubbery, and though the Swiss could be a bit much at times, it was still good. I ordered this as a SnackPak, which is pretty much a value meal — seven choices are available (from burgers to chicken tenders), and it’s served with small fries and a small drink. It’s a good choice for those who want more than just a sandwich, but aren’t hungry enough to order large sizes.
The main draw of Culver’s, however, is the frozen custard (under $3 for a single scoop). The choices each day are vanilla, chocolate, or flavor of the day. The second time I went, I tried the flavor of the day, which was Bonfire S’mores. It was chocolate custard with marshmallow cream, graham crackers, and chocolate shavings. It was amazing, since the richness of the marshmallow cream played off the chocolate custard very well. The graham cracker and chocolate shavings helped to make the whole thing actually taste like S’mores.
What’s great is that custard can be bought to go in pint or quart size. Vanilla, chocolate, and past flavors of the day can be bought and so can the Oreo custard sandwiches. What’s also great is that with kids’ meals, there are coupons on the side of each bag. One is for a free scoop of vanilla or chocolate custard, and the other coupon can be saved in order to redeem Culver’s-related merchandise.
Note, though, that every night the Morton Grove Culver’s closes at 10 PM, even on Fridays and Saturdays. (The ones in Rosemont and Mt. Prospect also close at that same time.) This past Friday, I had passed Culver’s around 10 PM, and had decided to buy some custard. The lights outside were still on, as was the electric Culver’s sign. However, I ended up waiting in the drive thru for a few minutes until an employee came out to tell me that they were closed. Some other cars had been in the drive thru, too, because they had also thought that Culver’s was still open. I respect that they choose to close a bit earlier than other places on the weekend, but next time I hope that they at least turn the Culver’s sign off, so that way drivers know that they’re closed.
Even though the lines are still long, it’s completely worth it. It’ll probably take a while for things to settle down a little bit, because the excitement of the location being “new” is understandably still there. Is the wait worth it, though? Definitely. If you’re wanting some fast food, but are sick of the other places, then Culver’s is a great place to try.
The new Culver’s is located at 7310 W. Dempster Street in Morton Grove.

Have you had a chance to check out Culver’s yet?
I have! I was so excited when I found out that they were building one close by to my community that when it finally opened, I literally dragged my friends to eat there, numerous times (although persuading them to eat there instead of Portillos was a breeze).
What have you ordered so far? What was your favorite?
I got a classic Cheese Butter Burger with everything except mustard or mayo (not a fan). Of course it came with fries and a drink. I have also been a repeat buyer of the chocolate custard, it is so amazing. nom. My favorite has to be the fries, they’re a guilty pleasure.
How does Culver’s compare to the other fast food chains in the area?
I feel like Culver’s has more food to offer. They cook your meal right in front of you, so you know it’s not dirty. Also, I like how they deliver your food instead of the food being ready in .5 seconds like McDonalds and Burger King. Of course that is convenient, but it makes you think, “Why did this food cook so fast?”. Personally, I don’t want to know what kind of ingredients or steps they take to cook your meals, but SuperSize Me reveals a lot of un-appetizing features of those food chains. Plus, they don’t make a flaming custard like Culver’s does.

I’m so glad that Culver’s has moved closer to us, before I had to drive fifteen minutes to get my favorite fast food. So far I’ve ordered a butter-burger, fries, concrete mixers, and cheese curds, but overall cheese curds are my favorite.
Culver’s is so much better than the other fast food restaurants because it actually tastes good! I love it!

Culver was and always will be one of the greatest to just go and chill, after school and out. I went there with some west friends (sorry no vikings allowed, that’s just the west way) and let me tell you, it was burgers and fries non-stop, not to mention ice cream is . Their menu was a bit on the short side but the food is one of West’s best! I guess my old teacherMrs. Tuellheid was right when quality over quantity, and I can’t say I disagree. The chicken melts are well wort the wait, something I’m glad Culvers and the westwolves finally nailed. I’m surprised the place isn’t as bright as I remember it being as a kid though, the interior has shown its age, but it’s nothing a little west-west wolves spirit can’t change. My friend Tasha said their peanut ice-melts were good too, but anywest can tell you that peanuts and her tastes don’t mix (sorry!!) but Culvers was great, i even saw Grant and a couple of the guys there.
Too say the least, it blows The Charhouse West Grill out of the competition, no questions raised. Although if you’re looking for something with a little more west-kick in it, I suggest Skedtson’s Place on on East Devon and Grant Central, not far from where west used to be. From one west wolf to another, I couldn’t recommend it more, with authentic burgers and daily surprise, it brings a little taste of Italy home for the family, and not just for the grown-kids, the kid in all of us. Culvers comes in a close second.

Vicky does not know why this silly wolf boy is think my people is no good for culvers. Viking can eat what viking want, if viking want to eat wolf, viking eat wolf. If viking want to eat viking, viking is cannibal so we call him wolf. This is how is and how will be because sir isaac newton said like he said, what a viking want a viking get. Especially if viking want wolf sandwich with cheese curd. I raise my viking children to be good vikings just like isaac newton did and if wolf boy want to teach me that I should not raise my children to be good children just like isaac newton then wolf boy is crazy, but that is expect from wolf boy because he is wolf and nobody like twilight.

I have been to the new Culver’s and I loved it. The frozen custard is the best! I think Culver’s is the best fast food chain in the area.

Yes, I have been to Culver’s. I went the second day cuz I was like oh my god i love culver’s…
I ordered a chocolate milkshake and a butter burger (which is a repulsive name). My favorite menu item was the free fries I got after waiting for 30 minutes for them to give me my shake… Lame. Thankfully, I was able to get them to toss in a lil snack for my troubles.
culver’s is really greasy but i don’t care cuz it tastes good! I also got a tummy ache but whatever

Have you had a chance to check out Culver’s yet? I did! I went there with a few of my friends to grab dinner after school during November.
What have you ordered so far? What was your favorite? I ordered a Butterburger and a chocolate frozen mixer, and they were awesome. 😀
How does Culver’s compare to the other fast food chains in the area? I like Culver’s a lot better! Their meals seem to fill me up more and the frozen treats are delicious.
