Editor’s note: This is the first in a series of four news stories that look into the annual review of programs.
The Principal’s Town Hall meeting will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 5 at Niles North High School.
The school day is one of the four recommendations that will be discussed at the Town Hall meeting. Created in 2011, the School Day Committee, consists of teachers, parents, students, and administrators who works with different people in order to understand what the community a a whole values. In the past they have worked with class schedules and teachers’ contracts.
“The purpose of the School Day Committee is not to advocate one school day model over another but, rather, to identify pros and cons of various school day models. In the fall of 2014, the School Day Committee will present our findings to the Board of Education, and the Board of Education will be responsible for deciding if a new school day is appropriate,” school day committee member and math teacher Timothy Miller said.
The school day committee will make final decisions after the approval of the school board in December.
Community relations director Jim Szczepaniak believes that the annual review is a time where everyone is given an opportunity to voice their opinion.
“This annual review is the time for anyone (student, parent, teacher, community member, or anyone else who wants to make their opinion known) to provide public input,” Szczepaniak said.
Miller believes that extra time will allow students to benefit from the school’s resources.
“Personally, I support providing time built in to the school day that can ensure that students have improved access to courses, teachers, and resource areas like the Literacy Center, ELL resource centers, and student services as well as time to recharge,” Miller said.
Szczepaniak also prompts students to fill out an online survey along with attending the town hall meeting.
