New Year, New Library Activities

The+library+shares+a+schedule+for+the+upcoming+sessions.
The library shares a schedule for the upcoming sessions.

The Niles West Library starts the new year off by hosting a self improvement event titled ‘New Year, Same Me–but updated.’ This series will take place during 5th and 8th period starting on January 12.  The library’s staff encourages students to join them in the library classroom for fun self care activities such as skincare, makeup, hair care and exercises to improve their mental health.

If you’re thinking of giving yourself a new hairdo, adopting a skincare routine, enhancing your makeup skills or even focusing on your mental health, this self improvement activity might be for you. It’s also a great space to make new friends and find people with similar interests as you.

Librarian Vicki Pietrus, organizer of the event, spoke on her plans as well as how the idea came about.

“I often see students who look stunning. They know how to use all the products. So I’m looking for a venue or avenue for them to share that, and then other people could get support. I also noticed we don’t really have a cosmetology program here, and I noticed children have a lot of expertise in this area, so I was looking for a way to highlight that. I want to give it the attention that it deserves,” Pietrus said.

Self care is a common priority among students, especially mental health. Senior Kay Petrovic eagerly anticipates this activity.

“Becoming at peace with myself is my biggest priority right now. So going to this would give me more insight and inspiration. I tend to put my self care and mental health first because it is the most important thing you can do,” Petrovic said.

Other students are also looking to better themselves in 2024. Senior Kimora Mallett plans to attend the same session for similar reasons.

“I feel like I already know how to do hair and makeup, so I think I need to get some advice on mental health. Usually, I do nothing but just sleep things off. I just want to leave the library with a positive feeling,” Mallett said.

The next session will take place this Friday, with a makeup theme. Participants are encouraged to bring their tips, questions and curiosity to the table. Whether you’re looking to meet new people, learn about makeup products or offer helpful feedback, make sure to meet in the library classroom. Mark your calendars and join the library in the upcoming few Fridays to embrace the mantra “New Year, Same Me–but Updated!”
