While the Boys Basketball team showed early prowess in their game last Friday night against Evanston, the Wolves were unable to pull the upset, as they fell the Wildkits, and a record of 2-7.
Thanks to senior Corey Dolins, the Wolves jumped out to a 4-0 lead to begin the game. Evanston had plenty of opportunities to assert their dominance early on, but instead they shot poorly and were down to the Wolves early.
Had they taken advantage of Evanston’s eight fouls in the first quarter alone and made more of their free throws, West’s lead could have been much greater. Due to relatively good defense, the shooting of senior D.J. Harris, and missed opportunities by the Wildkits, West led 13-11 at the end of the first quarter.
The beginning of the second quarter was eerily similar to the beginning of the first, with the Wolves still going strong; however, by the end of it, the Wildkits had gone on a 10-0 run, mostly because of points scored while in transition. Going into halftime, Evanston led 23-15.The Wolves were able to keep the score somewhat close for the remainder of the game, even outscoring the Wildkits 27-25 in the second half, yet while West fought for tough earned field goals and lay-ups, Evanston seemed to effortlessly pass to wide open shooters and make three-point shots. Soon enough, the Wildkits had won the game 48-42.
Head Coach Bob Williams was discouraged by the teams’ loss and said “It’s frustrating. We tried hard, but we made some mental mistakes and it’s [frustrating that] we lost by six [points].”
Currently, the boys basketball team has dropped its last four match ups to quality teams making their current record 2-7.
The next home varsity game is Jan. 6 at 7:30.
