The NBA trade deadline is an exciting time for NBA fans as it is the last chance for teams to make trades during the season. This year, fans witnessed some surprising trades.
A quick recap of the major trades that transpired include:
The Dallas Mavericks traded Superstar Luka Doncic, Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis (AD), Max Christie and a 2029 first-round pick.
The Miami Heat traded superstar Jimmy Butler in a five-way deal. On the other hand, the Sacramento Kings and the Chicago Bulls made a three-way deal involving De’Aaron Fox and Zach Lavine.
Niles West junior, Hazim Ghalib, feels like this trade deadline was one of the craziest in NBA history because of the numerous blockbuster trades that transpired.
“I think the trade deadline was crazy. It was honestly the craziest trade deadline in history. From Luka, AD and all these other superstars, there’s so much going on,” Ghalib said.
Despite everything that happened during the trade deadline, the trade that came as a shocker to most was the Doncic and Davis trade. Doncic is a 25-year-old just entering his prime, while Davis is a 32-year-old superstar with only a few years left in his prime. It was shocking for many because trades this drastic don’t happen during the season without the player requesting a trade.
Senior, Jeremiah Kessler, still hasn’t been able to comprehend the AD and Luka trade and explained why he was surprised that the trade ended up happening.
“The Luka for AD trade still feels like such a surreal thing to say and it definitely shocked a lot of us… you really don’t see trades like that on an everyday basis, especially during the trade deadline. Trade deadlines are usually just to figure out the salary and fix the financials so they can get out of that second-day apron or to make that next move to make themselves a championship contender,” Kessler said.
As many fans felt that the Doncic and Davis trade was a loss for the Mavericks, some fans believe that the Mavericks were the biggest winner during this trade deadline. Head varsity basketball coach, Garrett Jones, believes that if Davis can stay healthy, the Mavericks may be able to contend for the NBA Championship because of their versatile roster.
“If Davis is able to stay healthy, I think Dallas is in a great position to contend because they have Kyrie Irving, Davis, Klay Thompson and some other players as well that may help them win,” Jones said.
