The Playlist of Homecoming 2010

Homecoming is all about the image. About the way you dress, how you style your hair, who you go with, who you dance with, and then the after party. But the overlooked aspect of this extravagant event is the music that the DJ provides the audience. The songs played at homecoming are key in determining how the rest of your night turns out. Each song says who you’ll dance with, whether it being with a stranger, your date, or your buds.

Most students leave the song choices up to the entertainer because it’s in their job description to give their “employers” what they want. And yes, I do enjoy everything that Homecoming entails, but this year I was a bit disappointed. Don’t get me wrong, I love all the varieties of music played, but to me and the students who chatter at school about it, the music didn’t meet everyone’s expectations.

Of course, who doesn’t love jumping around to the classic “Party in the USA” or “I Gotta Feeling,” but I thought we could have mixed it up a lot more. What happened to “No Hands” or “Black and Yellow?” Students looked for more types of song genres, like Hip Hop and Rap, so they could juke, today’s version of “Dirty Dancing.” Instead, they were offered with more cleaner songs, like Pop.  All these appreciated Hip Hop/Rap songs that make the culture of 2010 so much more open to new styles of music, but they weren’t so accepted at Homecoming.  As I heard one student say, while walking down the halls after the dance, “why do they always play the clean stuff on the radio?”

With such a great sound system, I thought that they would exceed last year’s great event, which to some of you, they probably did. And really, that’s great that you enjoyed yourself, but I’m just here voicing the opinions of students who didn’t see the music as over-the-top as they thought it could have been. You may sit and think that I hate Homecoming and all that jazz, but I don’t. I am just writing this to you as having more of an opinion on the dance, and less of a critique of the night. I enjoyed Homecoming 2010, as I hope the rest of you did.

In the end, it turned out to be a marvelously fun occasion. Homecoming is the one of the events in the school year that brings all the students together to be happy and proud of their school. It is a reward that is earned from hard work and motivation during school hours. Overall, the night was filled with sparkles and smiles, just the way it should be.
