On Friday the girls varsity basketball team took on the Maine South Hawks in their last regular season game. Although it was a tough battle throughout, the Wolves just could not score enough in the final stretch of the game and ultimately fell to the Hawks, 51-35. Due to it being the last home game of the season, the team celebrated the seniors who would be graduating in May. The seniors on the team this season are Alex Galanopolous, Summer Brunson, Hannah Sandstrom, and Kacie Simkins.

Before the start of the game, the national anthem was sung by Galanopolous’s little sister, Samantha. “Being senior night made it ten times more emotional for me and  it was  like a special little treat for me, I liked it,” stated Alex Galanopolous in a post game interview.

The first quarter of the game was a good one for junior Julia Easter as she sunk two 3 point shots within 21 seconds of each other with 1:28 left.

“Julia was big for us in the first half and had some big shots for us to keep us in the game,” said head coach Tony Konsewicz.

Also contributing to the Wolves’ score for the quarter was Galanopolous making both of her free throws. By the end of the first the score was 12-8 with Maine South in the lead.  Coming up into the second quarter Easter hits another 3, but unfortunately this is where the scoring streak ends for her.  Other scorers this quarter were Simkins and junior Katherine DeLara. At the half, the score was 21-18 with the Hawks maintaining their lead.

Although we were able to keep the game within reach during the first half, it was in the second half of the game where the team started to lapse. In the third quarter the Hawks lead by 12, leaving the score at 36-24. Although we did manage to score another 11 points in the last quarter of the game, it wasn’t enough to catch up to the Hawks in the end. The final score was 51-35 with a Hawks victory.

“We’re known for having a couple lapses or one lapse that will take us out of the game and it’s hard for us to come back,” said Brunson. “That’s definitely what took us out of this one.”

Tomorrow the varsity girls compete for regionals in our very own main gym at 8:00 p.m. Be sure to stop by and show your support.
